As a program about travelling by boat I thought "Somewhere at Sea", about Timothy Spall going round the coast in his Dutch barge was much better than anything the three men have done.

Top Gear has replaced Last of the Summer Wine in the '3 reactionary old clowns bombing down a hill in an upturned bathtub slot' on British telly.

It's amateur comedy made by amateur comedians and falls between two stools - not funny enough to be comedy and not serious enough to be a consumer programme.

Agreed - I've given up on Clarkson and Rhys-Jones. But I do wish the engaging Timothy would get a more suitable boat.

Three men was uninteresting in the extreme, I reckon GRJ is a complete dick, and just who thought it appropriate to make a Maine to NY boaty programe without including a ride in a Downeaster and or a GB?

TG - contrived to the last detail, researched and planned to death. Still it reduces our licence fee as it makes so many millions for the Beeb in overseas sales. Won't make too much now though, that India episode was fake jeopardy tosh.

My thoughts entirely.

I just wish they could sell it abroad without subjecting us to such utter tosh first :(

Can I respectfully refer the panel to the latter part of this Bird Dropping?

I'm afraid this really is what the title says.

For example, he quantifies the number of people with manager in their job title. Floor manager is one of the many programme makers who have manager in their title, yet he assumes managers don't make programmes. And of course programme makers don't organise themselves.
Not everything is right at the beeb, but this guy really doesn't know what he's talking about.

As for the thread, programmes are subjective. My wife and I both hate soaps. Not seen one, even part of one, for at least 15 years. But strictly, we both love it. And great expectations, downton abbey are both great too in our opinion.

Is that interesting - no. Does it prove anything - no.

Ratings prove things are popular, and that's about the only measure we have. "good" is subjective. If your objective is ratings, soaps are, by definition, good. And if you think Top Gear is a consumer programme or anything much to do with cars then you are going to be disappointed. That's why it's popular with men and women - car programmes aren't.

In Top Gear - did no-one else notice the Union flag flown on the Rolls Royce wing was upside down? It is one of my pet hates and so disrespectful to being British. So many people don't even know that it could be upside down and which way is correct. I can't recall seeing any other national flag being flown upside down. What would be the result of flying the US Stars and Stripes upside down?

Personal opinion of course, but I think the nauseating Jeremy Clarkson (like Jonathon Ross) is way past his sell by date, and Griff Rhys Jones, who used to be enjoyable, has developed into a parody of himself - can't cope with any of them.
Ratings probably prove me wrong however.
And don't get me started on ANY of the Soaps, Strictly Come Dancing, Big Brother, Shipwrecked, X-Factor, Britain's Got Talent etc., etc. !!
Grumpy old age here I come ! (I'm only 54).
Grrrrr!
Welcome dear boy, welcome!!!!!

Clearly the Union Flag was upside down, he was in distress.
TG used to be my 'mustn't miss' programme, from the robin reliant space shuttle to the Channel crossing, utterly brilliant. The Botswana episode was so entertaining, but this latest piece was so so poor, I'm not sure they'll do another.
As for '3 men' it has always been an 'also ran' but slightly informative and amusing in it's own way. It's rare to see sailing or boat programmes on TV we shouldn't complain too much. It may lead to more of the same, but better quality.

I didn't notice but that is a poor show.

I still like top gear though. The American special was very, very funny.

The Vietnam one for me crossed the line.

I'm now trying to define "the line" but can't. I thought it was laughing with rather than laughing at. They laughed at the Vietnamese and I didn't like it. But on reflection they laughed at the Alabamians and that was hysterical, so my definition is useless.

They didn't laugh at the Indians so I think it was OK. I didn't hate it. But I didn't like all of it.

India one was OK. IMHO and O is all you get when it comes to telly.

I just watched the second 3 men. Loved it. That mobo was simply divine. Trumped even the gorgeous sailing boat in ep 1.

I really think the quality of 3 men is high. If you don't like it fine but it is a quality programme in my view. Compare it with original stuff on the minor channels.

People have complained it is set up. OF COURSE IT IS!! It's telly!! An hour of real life is so dull they call it big brother live.
Set up well though, with good views and nice boats. Nice, gentle, enjoyable, amusing and sometimes funny telly. Works for me.

Yes I did, but it doesn't bother me one bit. It's actually our fault for having an almost symmetrical flag. ;) if I fly it upside down on the boat is that really hateful!

Surely there are more important things to hate? Like jet skiers?

See how deftly I attempt to make this absurd thread about TV preferences into a decent ensign discussion ? :D

I would like to respectfully point out that that is incorrect. The BBC provides the only TV programming one can avoid paying for in the UK. One does this by not buying a TV licence (perfectly legit iff you don't watch broadcast TV). The commercial channels have to be paid for whether you watch TV or not and they cost you considerably more per hour than the BBC's output does.

And because TG sells for so much abroad it reduces our licence fee, it's like we're getting paid to watch it :D
