Top 16 VHF channels?

Duplex doesn't take up two channels, well, it doesn't on my handheld, there is a laid down sequence of channels you must have, 16 being one of them, but you will have to ask somebody else for that data, I can't remember.

Must have?

It's not a requirement to have a VHF, thankfully - although if you do I believe you are required to keep a listening watch on Channel 16 - not sure if that applies to handhelds, though - if it's all I have on board I only switch it on if I need to use it.

As far as I know I can have a VHF on board with just channels 6 and 8 if I want, although it would not be much use to me. What's this must have?

Any marine VHF, has to have certain channels fitted by law, I know there is a regulation, but I can't remember what the channels are. Have a look at that website, in the other post. I will.

Your ;list below looks slightly dodgy Ch 67 is not bridge to bridge, for example.

I'd go with:
Ch 06: distress working and coastguard messages
Ch 08: public intership
Ch 11: port ops and traffic control
Ch 13: bridge-bridge
Ch 14: port ops and traffic control
Ch 16: calling & distress
Ch 10: distress working and coastguard messages
Ch 67: distress working and coastguard messages
Ch 72: public intership
Ch 73: distress working and coastguard messages
Ch 77: public intership
Ch 80: marinas and other shore stations

Ken,
Marina's are usually on Ch 37/M1, and the M2/Ch 80 (Duplex, I think) was for clubs racing, if I remember correctly - but don't quote me!

Also, when coming back from Guernsey recently, I think the CG was broadcasting on one of the old public correspondance channels. Not sure which one, but 24 comes to mind.

Remembeing from my years as an Aux CG, the French and Dutch, for example, use Ch 67 and 73 as intership - as designated under international frequencies.

Then again the Aussies had a Ch 83A and the Yanks have their own designations.

regards,
Philip
