I often let myself carried away and usually end up with trillion tools.

If you are only allowed 10 essential tools to have on board, what top 10 would you have?

Sets would be allowed as one.

There is a very simple algorithm

Does it move ? Yes/No
Is it supposed to move Yes/No

If No/Yes the answer is WD40
If Yes/No the answer is Gaffer Tape

That's it really ?

In practice I have one of those toolkits in a small suitcase that contains most things you need. When working on the trailer heavier stuff accompanies me.

corkscrew
Bottle opener
A thing calling itself the ‘worlds sharpest knife’ which was given by a friend and is surprisingly handy

otherwise, I dislike going cruising with an array of tools and particularly garden tools (it always irks me that I have to have a garden hose on a reel in the lazarette for instance). I cruise with the stuff needed to repair in an emergency but try to leave toolkits for ‘betterment’ work (drills and all that) at home. Of course, I’m not as successful at this as I’d like to be but a boat full of old man shed stuff is to be avoided.

at home I have a garage full of the stuff of course.

I'd leave out the mole grips and soldering iron to make space for a multimeter and set of allen keys instead.

but whatever problem you identify with the multimeter might need a soldering iron to solve.

personally I’d bin the 12v Lidl drill which is not likely to be more effective than a good set of screwdrivers except as a light weather lunch hook.

Tough, but here is mine:

Multi meter.
Soldering iron + kit
Combination spanners
Screwdrivers - assorted tips
Hammer
Drill & bits
Mole grips
Files
Hacksaw
Adjustable spanner set

In addition I would have to sneak aboard: Multi tool with pliers. Perhaps I could pass this off as sailing equipment?

My spanner / socket kit has only the ones actually onboard and I forgo anything bigger than 17 for the adjustable.

Sail repair stuff as well...

Soldering iron doesn’t belong on a boat. Ratchet crimper for heat shrink terminals instead.
Leatherman.
Socket and spanner set.
Screwdriver and cutter set.
Hot knife rope cutter.
Oscillating saw
Drill driver both Ryobi.
Rupes polisher.
Multimeter.
Hacksaw.

I would prefer 20 though.

If you're going minimal, I'd ditch the multimeter and have a simple test lamp.

And do you really need a soldering iron for emergency repairs?
