Too much engine oil

Hi,
Changed the engine oil and filter on Saturday and added 6 lts. as per the engine manual. Went out for a buzz to check leaks and everthing looks ok apart from the level of oil on the dipstick. When the engine is cold it is about 1 cm. above the MAX notch on the dipstick. The oil is a nice clear colour so I don't think any old oil was left in that could account for this extra qty. The manual says not to overfill, what can happen, should I remove the extra oil?

Thanks in advance for any replies from my learned forumites.

On some engines overfilling can do damage to seals - my car manual warns about this. Quick call to Volvo?

I would remove a bit if poss.!

Also make sure you are parked in a levelled place, oops sorry you are on water !

I over filled my engines last year and the casualty was the oil sender started leaking !

I had to replace it!

Drain a bit out. In extreme cases crankshaft can break, as the crank webs "hit" the oil in the sump. Not likely, but drain a bit out anyway.

did it in the Porsche, overfilled it cause I misread the dipstick and then smoked up the M25 for 20 miles billowing gallons of blue smoke - was scary at the time, LOL

Thanks for the recos, I called VP and they recommended not exceeding the MAX on the dipstick also. Weird though, why would the manual overstate the qty. I'll suck a bit out.

Thanks to all

Ah, those would be Swedish litres. Generally a little smaller and more expensive than the common French litre.

Just to add a bit of confusion. Is the engine fairly new .If a bit antique.it has been known for the dipstick tube to work its way and inch or so into the sump, thereby immersing the dipstick to far into the oil, resulting in a over full indication.

Is the engine horizintal when you dip the sump or tilted towards the stern? any list on the boat when you are dipping the sump? - think about it. Amount of oil probably correct but engine is not horizontal.

It's impossible to completely empty the oil when you do a change, so there's still a wee drop in there.

Could be the inclination of the engine. I'll check it out on Saturday, but the fact that the manual states 6 litres concerns me. The engineers who design these things should know how to calc the correct capacity I would think. What I'll do is measure the excess oil to get it to the max notch, it'll be interesting to see how much it is.
