Tohatsu 3.5 2stroke

Cut out when reved cleaned carb now will run on lot revs open her up and she dies , any ideas

More knowledgeable people will be along shortly but the wisdom I have to offer is don't assume that because you've cleaned the carb that it's clean. Well worth taking it off for an even better clean.

Assume you checked the Fuel filter?

I had one until it got nicked. The only problem I ever had with it gave all the indications of fuel starvation. I cleaned the carb four times to no effect, then a mate noticed a clicking when it was unhappy. The problem turned out to be a bad earth connection on the coil and the clicking was s spark jumping the poor connection.. We undid the bolt where the wire connected to the block and cleaned everything up. End of problem.

I have one of these, Roy. I bought it new about 15 years ago and it’s done no more than a couple of hours per year, probably less. One summer it developed an issue similar to the one you describe. One of the Dinorwic gang suggested plug. I expressed my doubt as, at the time, the engine had probably done only about 10 hours. New plug solved the problem. Worth a try?

The float valve is aluminium and prone swelling with corrosion which would restrict fuel flow, there is hardly any space around it at the best of times so if it looks less than perfect worth getting a new one. Also the jet needle is prone to gumming up and sticking. If you remove the throttle slide and pull out the needle clean it with fine wet and dry. Lets us know what worked

How did you clean the carb?
The right way to do it is using an ultrasonic bath, but I didn't have one so basically, I took it apart and cleaned everything with a toothbrush and neat petrol. Pro tip, don't do it indoors! Pro tip 2 Don't poke wire into the jets to clean them - they're quite soft metal and made to high tolerances, a scratch could mess up the calibration permanently.

The right way to do it is strip it to bits and clean it with carb cleaner :-) as it's a solvent and will remove petrol deposits.

So we are in the middle of a bay so not many stuff , but I stripped carb down cleaned all of it ? And now it runs on tick over , if I increase revs it cuts out .it takes me ages to get ashore

Could be as simple as fuel, If the mixture is wrong, or old it can cause this. Try putting choke on a bit, and feathering it to the throttle. Also leave it running at tickover for a bit to warm it up.

Halcyon days, very envious.
