First of all I want to make it clear that we were not criticising the RNLI. We still supported it other years. We just felt that they needed our cash less as their reserves are "considerable".

But moving on to the quote above:-
Air ambulance YES & I understand that it is partly funded, but not enough.
RNLI-- Definitely a big NO NO. Fortunately it will never happen & rightly so . I can imagine a real mess if the govt got their hands on the RNLI & decided that it came well down the funding scale when cash was tight o_O Furthermore, I would be worried about some whitehall official deciding the costs that should be applied when aiding a stricken vessel.
Do we really want the French model? ( apart from Sybarite perhaps)

Then there is the matter of what would the wealthy old widows, with no relatives, do with their money when they passed on?---- Donkeys? Cats? Dogs Home?
What is the French model ? And ours is going to the Dogs Home??

That kind of thing is well worth a phone call. 0238 0604100 will get you to the main switchboard. ?
I cannot understand people who complain that emails have been unanswered & when asked they have not bothered to use the telephone. With so much spam a typical inbox gets filled with silly emails every day & emails often get missed. One can easily waste time with pointless emails sent out by people who type a few words & then copy then to a wide audience , expecting replies. Many cases just wasting the recipients time.
On top of that spam soon fills up the inbox. Now Microsoft Outlook is unable to differentiate " on behalf of" emails from genuine ones, the situation is worse. If one does not get an answer to something that one wants a genuine reply, then pick up the phone. If you cannot invest a few moments, then why should the recipient?

Ask Sybarite, he reckons that his govt aided system is the bees knees. Just do not have a breakdown & hope to get away with a free tow when in French waters.
As for the dogs home - Glad you expect to have some left in these current times. :D Better go before one's Chancellor of the Exchequer does his next budget, because he might be planning to sort that out for you:unsure:

Reimbursement for rescue fees can be part of your boat insurance. Actually, talking of the French system, all inheritance is given in a strict order by law. Indeed I’ve heard that you can sue your parents if you think they are spending your inheritance too quickly

I recall an annual finance meeting of our mooring committee. We first cancelled the RYA subscription as being a waste of time. Being a non profit organisation we had £700-00 to pass to charity. We then looked at the RNLI to donate the money, until some one pointed out that they were a somewhat "bloated" charity. It was also pointed out that our coastal village community was made up largely of the "elderly ".
It was further noted that the RNLI was called to our area once a year & the air ambulance once a month. You can guess where the money went.
Whilst we don't benefit from the RNLI in the Lakes we do have an air ambulance based 10 miles away. It flies past us at least once a day, some days two or three times. It is a valuable resource, apart from having a medical response for emergencies it frees-up land-based emergency vehicles as well. It is good that air ambulances are independent and not within the fiscal grasp of top-heavy charities. They deserve as much support as possible.
The GNAAS operate 4 helicopters in Cumbria and the North East. They got 1,262 callouts in 2020.
The base near us got a newly refurbished chopper in July. It had 55 callouts in the first month. Great North Air Ambulance Service - BBC News

Classic RYA subject to address would be sailing in and out of Europe . Buying in Europe . Staying on board in Europe , keeping a boat in Europe . Selling to Europe .. double vat and taxes
On the basis of addressing the problem right in front of your eyes , like !
Could’ve been popular with the membership base ?

Great, then you will have realised how much effort is being put in to address your concerns. ?
Ongoing ongoing
These are very real concerns to the whole yachting and leisure usage industry and its ‘buoyancy’?
As you will know , industry hates uncertainty

Of course they dislike uncertainty. ( the RYA is there for the membership, is it there for "industry") But one cannot blame the RYA for that. The RYA can put robust representation to govt but in the end it all depends on negotiations between the EU & the Uk. Then there are some quirks of individual countries. The RYA can & does update members of the current state of affairs. However, just getting that information from all the authorities involved can be a nightmare
The RYA does make representations & does report I am sure. With so many regular changes how does one expect them to communicate with the membership. If they wrote to me about buying & selling it would be a waste of time as that is not my priority. Mine is visiting France next year.
So they put it on a web site. It is up to you to read it. If you need further advice or urgent clarification there is the telephone. They do actually like to react with the membership- Or at least that is what i have found.

Exactly
I see the RYA as a portal or lobby group if you like . A conduit to explain things to government, like ooh I dunno , the impact of government legislation or prevarication or change !
You ( or I)can jump up and down or write to MP etc but the lobby route is better surely ? And hopefully articulate , proven and persuasive in its insightful explanation as to the playing out of actual or intended legislation drafting/cobbling together/winging it . Particularly how does one explain things to politicians who have little previous experience outside of politicking must be a bit of a challenge , no?
And, are you going to sail to France as you wish next year ? Sure about it ? Got the papers, permits, medical stuff, right diesel and life raft cert, flares , radio… what if you have to leave the boat there or get it brought back ( in extremis)on a trailer on a ferry … more paperwork , customs, declarations, …. And so on. Can you walk on to a ferry to pop back ?? Or pop over to oversee repairs . Repairs , hmm vat ??And so on
There! That should keep you writing for the rest of the day ! ( tongue in cheek?)

Things aren’t likely to get better until Ted Heath gets back into Number 10
Chance missed. Could have had John MDonnell as Chancellor
