To writer signed ECF

Personally I do like what Clive does with code flags for ECF. If I didnt have them sewn together into dressing lines I would copy him.
How about combining the two ideas with small code flags embroidered on a burgee (although the problem might be getting a suitable background colour)

You could have East Coast mud....

Or something representing the sun rising on our coast....

Or our beautiful blue water.....

Can't really have navy blue or red....

OK, my hat into the ring

I don't like the YBW burgee aesthetically speaking
I don't like the attitude of *some* of the proponents of the YBW burgee
I'm not wild about it's core association with the Motor Boats Monthly forum*
I'm definitely not wild about its secondary association with the Lounge

I DO think that the ECF has a distinct identity as a group
In fact, it's the nearest thing there is to a virtual online Yacht / Sailing Club there is
I AM delighted, and indeed priveleged, to be associated with the East Coast Forum
I'd like an aesthetically pleasing burgee or house flag to indicate that "membership"

* In no way critical or disparaging of motor boats, simply that to mine eyes the YBW burgee was originated by and is still, by some at least, considered the intellectual property of the Motor Boat Forum

So yes, I'd very much like an ECF burgee!

What he said.

Erbas gets my vote.

Plus I do like the sound of a East Coast Yacht Club without the hassle of infrastructure, membership fees, duty rotas, bar duty etc.

And whilst we're at it why are we right down the list of forum?
We appear to be busier than the Thames forum and they're up top.

Don't! I raised that very point and got roundly shouted down :o

I hesitated to suggest as much but I am minded of The Cutweb Internet Boat Club (CIBC) which was founded as an offshoot of the Canals Maling List (a forum in fact) of which I am a sometime member and one time sysop in order to offer the benefits of membership of an Association of Waterways Cruising Club affiliated club without the hassle and expense of premises etc. The CIBC holds an annual rally at some suitable location

I think there's some mileage in a similar idea but it doesn't need to get complicated or expensive nor does it represent a threat to the status quo!

My view for what it's worth is that we're lower down the forum to keep us out of the way of prying eyes from those very people some here, including myself, would rather not be associated with. Though it's not a mobo raggy thing as there are those in both camps who can be just as much a pain in the rear, and that's speaking as a bi-boaty by the way as I started off on a mobo and then saw the light, suppose I'm a born again sailor in a way :ambivalence:
As for the burgee, quite happy with what we have now, though maybe the addition of a set of waders wouldn't go amiss
The idea and thinking behind the burgee is that the mouse indicates an online meeting place, or club, and the glass implies a social person aboard
Well, we all meet online, and for most that fly the current burgee, we're a social bunch where others are welcome. Deny any of that and I agree, don't fly the current one, but if the description fits I see nothing wrong with keeping what we have, as said, maybe with an added extra to indicate the exclusive nature of what we have here. The ECF is, after all, the most social and welcoming group
Those not fitting that description are maybe just a bit more individual, but if they're not sociable there seems little point in joining in on here
Anyone for a drink ?
Home brew should be ready in a week :encouragement:

Since we're already an informal casual club in all but name I can't see the harm in enjoying the benefits thereof. Nor can I see the harm in having an ECF specific burgee

However, it's not going to ruin my life, or even my day, if it doesn't come to pass so if it's going to be contentious forget it

Can we start a Solent branch of the ECF? Once it got itself established it would naturally outgrow the ECF and we could then merge the two clubs and move the headquarters to (for e.g.) Lymington or Cowes or somewhere where there's plenty of water and more intelligent life.

Ah, but we'd have to discuss good quality restaurants and windward ability if we did that... it'd never work! :D

I guess we could circumvent the whole process and go with the Lessons Learned experience.
We could call it the .... Royal Corinthian Yacht Club. Has an impressive ring to it.

I actually did enjoy my membership of RCYC, and as several here would attest, they did a magnificent job for our wedding. To wind up the Ensign Obsessors I even had a blue for a couple of years.

But, I realised, I am just not 'clubbable', which is why I am happy with the forum as it is. People pop in, people do stuff, people leave not to be seen again there is no compunction of any sort on anyone.

Who let him in here?

We shouldn't have a bespoke ensign... That could be copied by q ships who are not real members.. We should have a changing set of flag signals exchanged amongst true members via a one time cypher on a weekly basis...

On that basis a 'Gingerbread' man would add to the theme.

Even better, issue each member with an Enigma machine to come up with the "signal of the day!
