Just back from a thoroughly enjoyable two weeks in the Eastern Baltic. We joined our friends on their boat (an Arcona DS40) in Helsinki, and sailed to Riga via Tallinn and a number of smaller Estonian ports. The sailing was good, the ports and facilities were being improved, the people were helpful - and we saw very few other boats (other than in port). Those 'butters who have waxed lyrical about the Baltic are dead right - it's excellent.

ps - The most bizarre moment was arriving in Pirita (Tallinn) to be greeted by a bagpipe band on the quayside. We resisted the urge to man the side and salute - it turned out to be part of a "Scotland - Estonia" week to improve trade opportunities etc. The wee laddies wi' ra pipes were performing various gigs around Tallin.

One assumes the principle being to carry on playing until the Tallinese(?) had bought something.

Now you have

tasted just a little of the delights of the Baltic why not take your boat there and base it in either Sweden or Aland.

Its much cheaper than UK, has better weather, is more friendly and you get more sailing.

Lots of good places to over winter.
