To lock the prop or not?

The gearbox you are referring to is almost certainly a Volvo Penta MS series. From memory, I don't think those transmissions need to be locked in gear so i'm not sure why that was done (I could be mistaken).

The input shaft will be a lot more expensive than a cone replacement, but yes - it would take a lot longe to wear out too.

Just been out to check which gearbox I have. It's a Kanzaki MBW20-P, which has a multi-disc clutch rather than a cone clutch.
Attached is the Yanmar Technical Bulletin covering a variety of gearboxes and why you shouldn't lock them while sailing.

Pretty much sums up what we have said - good to know that the majority agree with the manufacturer for a change ???
