Tips for starting the new season

Whatever is used for cooking fuel, get TWO fresh boxes of matches and seal each in separate damp-proof containers. Tuck them away.

And then use, in practice, a long-spout gas lighter and keep the matches for back-up. Especially good for ovens and grills.

I was surprised to discover that such lighters are allowed in carry-on baggage on aeroplanes; at least mine has not been confiscated in several years of travel.

+1. I was surprised to find my old dad in France, still asking visitors from the UK to bring 'proper' British matches...when he himself had a long-nose lighter with piezo-electric ignition.

Since I suggested he keep one for his gas hob and another for wood-stove lighting, the boxes of Bryant & May have lain dormant.

Make sure there's a malt in the bar and cigars in the humidor...
Beer in the fridge has already been mentioned :-)

Develop a plan of what sailing you intend to do - not that you will stick to it, but it's a useful start point. Otherwise you might end up doing nothing.

Get my damn knee sorted out so I'm not hobbling around like a demented cripple! :mad-new:

Good idea .. but stay in hospital for as short a time as possible, since the chance of acquiring a hospital borne infection after surgery increases with the lengthy of stay.. My father had one knee done, which worked pretty well, but spent a further 3 weeks fighting off an acquired MRSA like infection. You may be more fortunate....
He decided NOT to do the other knee as a result..?

Tips:

1. Do at least one less job than you planned.
2. Before ripping anything out, go home and think about it.
3. Buy something shiny that goes bleep but requires minimal wiring - it satisfies the fettling cravings and is a hell of a lot easier than redoing the saloon headlining.

Consolidate lists. Write new date on top of shiny new list and Put In A Safe Place..

Clean boat and air it, put on shorts, settle into cockpit with a good read and a good cup of tea, enjoy sunny start. Avoid anyone with large tools in their hand, brushes, pongy unguents and goops, or multimeters and worried expressions.

Repeat tea, airing and shorts until weather breaks. Then do some real jobs below, under awning or in a workshop .

start your jobs at the beginning of winter not the end! anything you need/want can be ordered in plenty of time at beginning of winter. Chances are its out of stock in March, the sail loft is flat out with work and repairs from everybody that's only just realised the sail needs fixing!

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the tips so far - they're great and some I would never have really thought about doing.

If you have anymore, please keep them coming!
