A tip.

If you ever replace your water pump, make sure that you connect the inlet and outlet the right way around. If you don't do this you will find that your engine gets very hot.

If this happens, don't bother replacing the impellar, checking for blocks in the system etc, just put the pipes back the way they should be.

Trust me, I know from recent experience...........

Sorry to disappoint you Ken.

Now I have to spend £40 on a new rubber exhaust pipe cos it got damaged in the process.... When will this bloody boat leave me alone to have a good time. Just 1 week-end would be good.

Know the feeling, not the water pump but the outlet pipe to the Exhaust popped off.all water in the bilge and and only indication was a slight change in engine note as the plastic duck melted and blocked the exhaust.Bridged the duck with a piece of ordinary plastic hose to get back.no problem with over heating of the hose. Now have wide band clips with bolts on the yanmar 2GM 20 water pipes

When I bought my boat about ten years ago the siphon break valve was seized in the open position with the result that water was being pumped out into the bilge. Instead of replacing it I took out the valve and fixed a small diameter plastic bleed tube from the defunct valve into the cockpit. This lets me know that water is being pumped throught the cooling system and also acts as a siphon break when the engine stops.
A week ago as I was leaving Weymouth I saw steam coming out of the bleed tube. I stopped the engine immediately and after investigation found that the impeller had disintegrated.
It is greatly reassuring to see the 'telltale' and after the Weymouth experience it has proved its worth.
The idea may be useful to others
