Tiny Tach Diesel counters seem to be recommended quite frequently on the forum. I was considering one for the cockpit bulkhead (to be fitted under the companionway) and wondered how 'water resistant' the display actually is? I wouldn't expect it to be any more exposed than the chartplotter or the Fusion remote. Anyone had any problems with water ingress?

I fitted one to my last boat - worked reliably for about 6/7 years on cockpit bulkhead.
Another bloke in club fitted one - stripped threads on the sensor but he is cack-handed

Had one for the last two years, mine is mounted internally just screwed to a panel. Works fine, unit seems to be pretty well potted so no concerns about the water resistance where I have it mounted.

I was very happy with the two which I fitted to Lynx but she is a Catalac with a wheelhouse.

Thanks for the responses guys, I was trying to work out if I needed to put a Perspex shield/canopy over it which I would ideally not want to do in case people kept catching it when stepping over into the cockpit. :encouragement:

I've no experience of them but came across this US Review which found the display unit suffered moisture ingress: http://sailing.about.com/od/boatmai...ment-Tachometer-For-Diesel-Marine-Engines.htm

Looks a useful bit of kit, but seems would benefit from better info in both US and UK (on the latter's website no prices and some of the FAQs have answers that don't address the question posed!).

Agreed ... the website is a bit 'amateur' ... and the FAQs are pants. The UK site doesn't even have prices on. Seems a shame when the kit looks quite good.

Fitted one years back on a Honda outboard. No worries ever since..

FAQ on TinyTach US homepage said:
How long does the battery last? The lithium battery life calculates to 5+ years under normal use. It probably will last longer, but it is not replaceable because the tachs are potted and cannot be opened. Although very low draw, the battery is always on, and will display the hours when the engine is not running. If there is no display, the battery is dead. We do not recommend buying tachs from 3rd party dealers unless you are sure that it is not too old. The diesel Tiny-Tach has flash memory - no battery.

Where it says 'attach to the fuel line' what exactly does it mean? Any one of the four injection pipes? Or one on each?

When I spoke to Richard some years ago (UK dist.) he asked abou no. of cylinders and supplied the correct version. Highly reccomended, I've had three, two petrol outboard and one diesel.

Yup,great bit of kit.As above received before cheque sent.Sensor fitted to any injector line seems to give the same readings.I tried ours on both injector fuel lines(Beta BZ482) and got the same readings.Been on for two years now and still working. We only use for it revs but im sure the other functions are useful. It is however 'tiny' so young eyes are required to read it!

One, on any injection pipe. It clamps round the pipe and senses the swelling/pulse of the injection. Must have to be set for the number of cylinders. My engine is single cylinder. I have had one of these for a good few years and it works fine. By the way, it is handy as an engine hours meter too.
