I have a pesistent minor seep at the join of the iron keel and the stem in my wooden sloop. Thinking of a copper tingle with Sika to stem the flow for a while. Has anybody tried this? How are they attached etc. Your experiences will help.

regards
John

This may sound like a silly question, but how do you know where the water is coming from?

I don't like the idea of a tingle; I respectfully and cautiously suggest that you check the stem to keel scarph stopwater, espescially if she has been ashore for a while, and if that looks OK then consider dropping the keel and re-bedding it (consider, only, for the time being!)

Re-bedding the entire keel, plus new bolts, is very much the order of the day and will be undertaken v. soon.

I know where the water is coming from becasue I poured water into the bilges just forward of the mast and watched it pour out at the keel/stem joint. I have re-caulked with cotton and red lead/putty but I still have the seep. With the water on the outside perhaps it will not seep. I will let you know. Launch date is 23/07

Like Mirelle, I have always regarded tingles as a temporary "bodge", applied in desperation on a beach somewhere in order to get you home. When inspecting 'Swallow's hull before buying it, I was pleased that there were no tingles evident; they are a sure indicator of [a] serious trouble, and a bodger owner.
Peter.

At about 0330 today (why do some people say "0330 this morning"?) common sense prevailed. Tingles are out - I expected such a response - and the treatment is to remove the offending piece of wood and replace with a new piece nicely bedded in. That has been my rule all along this project but I guess I was just getting a bit frustrated with matters.
Thanks for input

John

I must apologise for teaching Grandmother, but do check that stopwater!

As you say, it may well take up once afloat for a few days.

I have two tingles on the hull of my boat, which were added as a belt and braces solution after we thought that the seams in those places might need some help but weren't really sure if there was a real problem. Can anybody tell me what view a surveyor would take of this if she was ever surveyed?

He wont be pleased to see tingles, that is for sure, any wooden boat surveyor worth his salt would want them removed to check underneath them.
