Hi all

I"m taking the boss round to Woolverstone on Saturday for her first time trip out of the River. I was wondering if you had a rough idea of how long the walk takes to the Butt & Oyster, as I've promised to buy her dinner there.

Thanks

David

With all the rain we have had recently I think it will be extremely muddy so take your wellies and a tourch if returning in the dark. 20 minutes should do it. The muddiest part is usually nearer Woolverstone so easy to turn back and use a taxi. Ask at the marina office for a local taxi number before you set off. There is a much less muddy route to walk, taking twice as long, if you go up the drive at Woolversone, turn slightly left at the green and pass south of the little church then head south east to Page's Common then follow the track down into Pin Mill. Should be obvious from the OS map.

As others have said, it does get very wet very quickly. The last time we were there - five or six years ago - it was not well signposted. The marina office used to keep stocks of a rough sketch map that they would give out to visitors on request.

It never has been really signposted, apart from a finger post by the RHYC dinghy park, and I believe there is another at the Pin Mill end somewhere. In between you just follow the worn path and watch out for boggy bits, tree roots and straggling brambles. We have walked this path for over 30 years and in the past it used to be far wetter to the extent that you had to make large diversions to avoid the worst of the mud even in wellies, and it was sometimes easier to walk along the saltings rather than under the trees. These days, in Summer at least, it is not that bad.

The last time we ate at the B&O, which was probably a year ago, we were put in the annex. At first we were a bit disappointed but it was very pleasant and we received excellent service.

If you simply walk straight ahead and do not take any of the few off shoots you cannot really go wrong its nothing to sweat about.
Done the walk in wind lots of rain/thunder and lightening nothing underfoot that decent footwate cannot cope with.

Cheers, Col.

easy walk but agree about the mud, tree roots etc. if you have promised SWMBO dinner then also agree that Ipswich might be a better bet with more choice of restaurants. dinner also implies you might be walking back in the dark........

It's rained all day today and forecasts the same tomorrow. Ipswich does offer a better choice of restaurants, but they will all just be town centre restaurants, Pin Mill has its own attractions.

HW Harwich is about midnight tomorrow, so plenty of water if you wanted to make the trip by tender. Or, If you chose Shotley instead of Woolverstone i'd be happy to drop you off at Pin Mill, but you'd need to find your own way back as i'll be in the sailing club :)

Thanks very much for the kind offer Paul.

I think we're gonna chance it, there are a couple of places in Ipswich close to the docks, especially the Lord Nelson, but we have to be back in the Tidemill Tomorrow so Woolverstone is as far as I want to go on this occasion.

The boss has good footwear, and actually enjoys the outdoors, so I'm hoping she'll think it adds to the adventure :)

I suppose the worst case is that we can't make it and we eat at Woolverstone instead.

Thanks for all the info folks, I'll let you know how bad it is once we've hopefully made it there and back!

You're welcome. Unless it's changed in the past week or so, the restaurant at Woolverstone is closed.
