Time to ban motorboats from the Solent?

I was sitting in Newtown Creek at the weekend. Meanwhile there was a continuous roar from motorboats in the Solent and a brown smog. Surely the time has come for noise and emission restrictions for the motorboat community?

Cripes, as if it hadn't been hot enough this week already! ? ? ?

I think it's fairly inevitable that the sale of new ICE boats will be outlawed at the same time as new ICE cars. How much longer after that running an ICE boat will be feasible remains to be seen.

Is there a plan to install electrical charging points every few miles at sea?

Fawley power station is closed?

Whatever you do, don't mention the fact that almost all of our boats are made of, erm .....GRP ....ssssshh

If pushed, just use may Grandmothers defence, "You dear child were a gift from God your parents found beneath a cabbage one morning!

Just because people currently use their boats in a certain way does not mean that this is the way they will always be used, or always should be used.

A boat with a decent sail plan, a battery pack good for maybe 50 miles or so at an economic cruising speed and suitable hydro and solar power sources ought to be a very viable cruising boat. The only limitation would be doing long trips in zero wind.

Miniature nuclear fusion reactor?
Change of mindset from "I've decided to go to Salcombe this weekend even though I'll have to motor for 8 hours to get there" to "Where is the forecast good for this weekend?" is probably easier...

Funny you say that, I set sail to L'aberwrach two weeks ago, ended up drifting in Lyme Bay with a forecast for more drifting, so diverted to Salcombe. Whereupon an afternoon breeze of 9-10kts put me on a port fetch towards Dartmouth doing about 8kts. Wind backed about 5 miles off Dartmouth so I thought, hang it, and we have a fab few days there.

In that sense I certainly agree with you, better to sail the wind than suffer a bout of target fixation.

I broadly agree with you, but disagree with your assessment of the speed at which such a change could or would take place.

In the meantime, we can look forward to the sail-powered next generation of fishing boats and lifeboats. ;)

All the way there and half the way back ...

Seriously, I used to have a relatively fast boat (First Class 8) with only an outboard auxiliary even with enough petrol on board to create a fire hazard, it was only enough to get us halfway to Cherbourg. I can't see electric being viable.
