Time Expired Flares

No, not from the 70's, however I have discovered from the Yarmouth CG today that they do not have any arrangements for the disposal of old flares. They put me in touch with Marine Safety in Lowestoft, who incidentally were very reasonable in providing servicing for my life raft, new flares, and lights for lifejackets at less than chandlery prices.

The good people at Marine Safety will take flares at a cost of £3 each. This is not a money making exercise, they have to send them to Aberdeen to get them dealt with.

Blimey, they are dear enuff already.

Its probably about time that the life cycle of flares was managed in a similar way to cars in the near future. There will be a disposal charge built into the purchase price, and you return them from whence they came after they have expired.
Charging afterward is going to invite a lot of flares suddenly appearing on Bonfire night as entertainment.

I have 12 out of date flares that came with Karouise and as I plan to spend a couple of weeks on the French coast this year perhaps I should get them off the boat. I am sure I have read somewhere that the French may fine you for out of date flares.

I think a phone call to Thames CG at Walton is called for! Yes, Thames still take them. Bit out of the way but 12 x £3 each is more than the fuel cost!

To be fair to Marine Safety, who I've used for the past few years - their service charges are very competitive and their charge for replacement flares very reasonable (much lower than chandleries). So the cost for them disposing of your old flares is more than offset by the reasonable price they charge you for replacement.

As well as servicing, they hire out liferafts for short periods (1 month in my case) at very attractive rates. Tel:01502 500940
