Timber yards\' colour codes

I notice that when I buy hardwood the sawn ends are often painted with different colours. Not only does this protect the end grain but it obviously identifies the species.

Question: Does each timber yard have it's own code or is there an industry standard colour-coding? If the latter, it would be useful to know what it is, for identifying odd pieces you might have lying around or that you get secondhand.

They are actually shipping marks and nothing to do with the type of timber . You will also notice the have something stamped on them like a couple of crowns etc .... Also seals the ends of the timber as said .

It's probably done to signify that the wood is from a non sustainable resource to p*ss the tree huggers off.

Stress graded timber can be colour coded, according to its' rating, but I've only ever seen softwood stress graded, not hardwood.
We've got a few bits of hardwood at work (originally sold as bowl turning blanks) which have painted end grain. The African mahogany is green and the Brazilian mahogany is blue from memory. I'm not sure it has any significance.

Nice attitude, you think it is a waste of time trying to prevent deforestation of ancient woods or jungles.
