Tilly Lamp - magnificent success - more Tilly Lamp tips needed

The biggest problem with Tilley lamps on small boats - and I write with a little experience - is the huge amount of condensation they give. A pint of paraffin can give the best part of a gallon of water,

One of us has made a mistake with the chemistry or the arithmetic.

I make it approx 1.1 pints of water from 1 pint of paraffin.

None the less potentially quite a bit of condensation

Mantles used to contain radioactive material, usually thorium.
Thorium is an alpha particle emitter, The alpha particles won't go through a sheet of paper. .

I've got a box of over a hundred old Aladdin mantles,

Better put them in paper bag to stop the alpha particles getting out then. :)

Yup, I think I was wrong. I was doing moles and forgot to convert into volume.

C11H24 + 17 O2 -> 11 CO2 + 12 H20

156g + 544g -> 484g + 216g

So with densities of 0.74 kg/l and 1.00 kg/l, 210cc of undecane gives 216cc of water. Lumme, that's level pegging!

See my corrected post.

I took C12H26as the formula for kerosene and 0.8 as the density. to arrive at 1.1 litre from 1 litre

but for some reason made 12 x 12 = 72 first time round.

paraffin is hateful crawling creeping moving around stuff

meths and petrol evaporates... paraffin likes to linger on rags, around funnels and will seek to escape through the thread of the tightest bottle where it seeks to spread itself all over the outside

How do I keep the lamp, the boat and myself fragrant?

plastic bags, rubber gloves, an oily rag

De-odorised lamp oil(and even scented stuff if you're feeling particularly artistic) is available; some experimentation should reveal if the stuff is compatible with a pressure lamp. Quite a bit more expensive though.

I am very pleased to hear that John, very pleased indeed..:D
I suspend two.
I requisitioned two sink filters, you know, the metal ones that are dish shaped with lots of little holes...
And then I made a hole in the middle so it surrounds the burner and fitted a clip under each made of monel wire..fits snugly under the glass.....keeps the moths out.:D
