Tight oil filter :(

Mine were insanely tight last year for some reason to the extent they broke a metal strap wrench.
Finally got them off with the webbing cord type.
As above, just hand tight when they go back on.

before you assemble it, make sure the seat is very clean and smooth. Same for the bolt that it screws onto. Apply a smear of oil or grease to the seal before you screw it on. Do it up hand tight, clean all around it with a clean cloth, start up the engine and run it for a few minutes, then wipe round the joint with a clean tissue to check for leaks. Give it another fraction of a turn if there are leaks and test again. If you find yourself having to apply anything more than hand force to stop it leaking, then there is a problem that needs to be investigated further.

Stab it with a screwdriver if super tight and use that as a handle. As stated only hand tight is best

Did that on a car oil filter and was a big mistake.
Oil everywhere and the filter just started to rip apart. There surprisingly thin. You also run the risk of stabbing the spin on thread with your screwdriver.

I use a synthetic strap type wrench now.

I have used various wrenches and sometime nothing grips enough. When the sh one t hits the fan two screwdrivers jammed right through will give a good grip. Yes, messy but works. Using a bit of rubber tube over the whole thing is also effective but when do you have that handy!

Yup! Same here, had one this year that needed a big G Clamp to act as a wrench as noting else worked and ended up breaking 2 strap wrenches. Had tight with new one, it's almost like the rubber seal swells up over time.

i would suggest the rubber ring wasnt lubricated on installing

The screwdriver thing doesn't always work as previously mentioned.

Chisel (bluntish, or straight through screwdriver 'chisel') on the flange with a few taps of hammer usually breaks the seal, then it should come off with a strap wrench!

That sounds like a good idea :encouragement:

I find the 3 legged wrench as in first picture tend to slip, grips better by putting some rubber tubing over legs.Have removed a filter by tightening a jubilee clip over it and tapping the screw with a long screwdriver and hammer.

I did a diesel maintenance course with Mermaid Marine many years ago, one tip I’ve never forgotten is to lightly cover the new filter with a little engine oil (normally not necessary if you’re hands are already oily from changing filters etc) and then tighten it up by hand until your hand starts slipping. Doing it that way means you can’t over tighten it.

I found a oil filter socket (obviously the correct size) very good for getting filters off, and putting them on again. Hand tight plus quarter of a turn. On my previous D9s with 3 oil filters per engine it always worked and made life much easier.
