Tight Fit

Not quite the same situation, but about twenty years ago a customer of mine who had business interests in Huddersfield decided to take his Narrowboat to Huddersfield to use as accomadation while at the premises. He checked the route he was planning to use which-IIRC-involved using a bit of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, built for-again IIRC-55 foot broad beam L&L Short Boats. He was assured the by putting his 57 foot Narrowboat at an angle, corner to corner, he would pass the locks OK.

The first L&L lock he got into he could not shut one gate. He tried all ways before calling the BWB guys. They said " 57 foot-no problem mate " When he insisted he would not fit they came and took a look.

After a bit of in and outing someone eventually got a tape measure out and found the boat was a tad over 59 feet!

Red faced, Murray-for that is his name-was faced with a two week trip to get round to Huddersfield another way.

He purchased the boat as a 57 footer and had had it 17 years without knowing its true length...........................

I guess the houseboat was out of penton hook marina. We went round there in the dinghy in the summer to check everyone was behaving themselves and I did not notice this particular floating object but it could have been hiding.

I thought Chertsey lock was narrower than shepperton but turns out it is wider. Optical illusion I guess.

It looks to me like a new one going somewhere. It's not finished yet, the final exterior cladding is not yet fitted and the top section of roof was left off so it would go under the bridge.

By the snug fit, I would say the designer got it right and it's bang on the maximum size that would fit.

A few days heavy rainfall and it would have been too high. They had to pick their time, I would guess, with no margin for error.

Why madness ? If all was legal could be regarded as helpful cooperation ?

So every time the barge wants to move they have to dismantle infrastructure ? Good idea.

Much better to just say doesn't fit , very sorry.

IIRC no one was billed for it , so it's waterways paying for it ( you indirectly )
