Looking for a tide app for my phone/tablet that will calculate the leaving time for a channel crossing, Nab Tower to Cherberg.

Any help that can be given would be much appreciated.

Free apps are always welcome, don't know if these are available or if they have to be paid for.

Also whist I have your attention, we have a plotters on board but I like the idea of having back up nav software on the tablet as well, any advice here would be great to.

Thanks

Toby.

You dont need an app.

Decide from the pilotage notes and the tidal data what time you want/need to arrive ...... but I dont remember any particular constraints.

estimate your likely speed, measure the distance from the chart and calculate the time you will be wanting to depart.

We always left Chichester entrance at about HW because that was the time we got there from a drying mooring at Dell Quay.

Also, and perhaps more relevant, consider what the tides are doing down the eastern side of the IOW. Ideally you want to leave so that you get the maximum benefit from the ebb tide to carry down there and clear of the Island.

Try Navionics.com for a backup app for your tablet. Perhaps you could put Navionics into this forum's search facility and see where that took you...

Chichester – HW Cherbourg + 4.5
Eastern Solent – HW Cherbourg + 4

I've always used W Princessa as my departure point, rather than the Nab. Less likely to get involved with heavy metal.

I have had a 15 year gap in my sailing career due to work, marriage and children, but even back before my father had a DOS programme on an early IBM Thinkpad that worked it all out perfectly and easily from the comfort of our kitchen long before we set sail. Things must have got even better and more accurate than then.

I do have a tide book on board, would not be without it, but for passage planning long before you leave home the convenience of a stable programme to run the numbers seems to make sense to me.

I will see what I can Google, just thought I would start here.

Thanks for the replies.

Have a look at Tidesplanner by tubaco - you need some IAPs (though these are very cheap) to enable forward planning of more than a week, but I have used this now for a couple of seasons and find it useful. It also gives tidal streams. Not sure if it will calculate leaving times for you but, it provides all the info you need to plan.
