With a couple of friends this year we are taking a trip from Plymouth to Santander. 2 questions? Does anyone know of where we might get travel insurance (medical etc) if one of us gets ill or injured. It must be more difficult if we are 'making our own way there' by yacht.

Secondly, anyone know of any tidal stream atlases for Bay of Bioscay and Santander: Admiralty Atlases don't go that far south as far as I can see

Hi
sorry cant help with both questions but be sure to get a E111 from post office. fill it in and take it with you. you can claim back most of your medical expenses. this would be an advantage in the event of a minor injury when it wouldn't be worthwhile to claim off your insurance because of your access.

As you've probably discovered most travel policies exclude sailing. However Pantaenius do a travel policy that includes sailing your own boat. We had this on an annual policy - not quite the cheapest but comprehensive cover

to fire up a debate...............

I'm always amazed that in this country we constantly knock the NHS and claim that 'it's better everywhere else in the EU'. Reportedly, people go abroad for treatment because 'it's better; quicker .........' Do we get many people from the EU coming to UK for treatment? (from elsewhere is a different kettle of fish).

Then we get paranoid about insurance when we're only travelling to the EU. I would have total confidence in the services in France/Spain/Germany/Portugal/Austria/Scandiavia at least. OK, there might be a little to pay in some countries.

Just a point, after getting an E111 and filling it in, it MUST be stamped by the PO!

Admiralty tidal stream atlases do go that far south - its just that there's nothing to speak of as a regular tidal stream thats worthy of note. Away from the influences of the channel, the tidal streams are all more or less linear - in and away from the coast and follow the local times of high water low water etc. (eg see Reeds page 938 and note that Reeds doesn't try to print one for N Spain...) In addition, although the spring range at Santander is 4.4 Metres or thereabouts, the continental shelf is only a few miles offshore and I understand this minimises the effect of the tidal stream. When I last sailed there, there was certainly a tidal stream in and out of the port, but surface drift due to wind and ocean current appeared more of a factor as soon as we were clear of the port. Even these were small and almost insignificant.

Thanks for thr replies so far. I agree Tidal streams may not be a problem but I'm just interested to know if there are any atlases for the south of Biscay area.

As far as travel insurance - I always carry a E111 but on this occasion was wondering whether we ought to take something else out as well - not just because we might fall overboard but just in case one of us became ill and had to be repatriated for example. I was asuming that because we were not travelling by a recognised carrier (i.e. going by sail) any ordinary Travel Insurance would not cover us, or cover us at a extortionate price! Thought there might be a compnay that others have used who are used to dealing with sailors.

Just like to know what others do

Welcome to the mad house Frank, I've been a 'fan' of your weather site for many years.
