We saw a three masted barque sailing up channel as we were crossing from Treguier to Plymouth last Wednesday evening. Has anybody any idea which one she might have been?

I shall hazard a few guesses - perhaps one of the two Sea Clouds, or Stadt Amsterdam?

Maybe google the current (or just finished?) Tall Ships Races, and see who participating, and where they are, and then that will give an idea as to who it might not be.

For your interest the is a Sea Cloud type vessel under construction in Marin,Rias Bajas in Galicia.Looks like the big fishing boat builders are turning their hands to another market;and are well qualified to do so.Also seen from the road in passing a very big two masted schooner and a very big four master with out top masts!

Possible identification

Thanks for all the contributions. It can't be the Stadt Amsterdam because she's a ship not a barque. Thanks for the pictures Mark. I particularly liked the ones of the Bounty. I think the vessel we saw is the Lord Nelson because of the hull colour (black), the rig and position now (Holland). I shall remember the sight for a long time and it's nice to have a name.

Could have been the Belem. She was north of Treguier on Wednesday, but only about 30 miles north, then heading for Cherbourg.

we saw a large barque anchored off cawsand bay, looked like it was under an argentine flag but not too sure as the sun was in the corner and the light blue and white stripes were set out like the stripes in the usa flag.

looked rather like they'de stolen the bridge off a paddle steamer!
