Threads and thread drifts

You don't seem to understand the concept of an insult. Even if something is true or not a statement can still be an insult..... A person can be exceedingly fat but calling them so is still most possibly insulting.

As for people reaching certain positions again whether true or not does not in my view give them the right to preach to others.
I have no issue with wealthy people provided it does not carry with it arrogance

Also in your post above you have been insulting to housewives suggesting that in some way you are better than them. I suspect however you don't realise your insult
Just in case someone would suggest that I'm feeding the trolls, I'll declare myself guilty as charged in advance, but I can't resist challenging your very superficial logic a bit.

Ref. the semasiology of "insult", if we follow your fat person analogy, what you are implying is that you are indeed a troll, and well aware of it - as any exceedingly fat person is of his/her condition, obviously.
BUT, you don't want to be called a troll, because when the truth sounds offensive it should be kept hidden.
Fairenuff, you are neither the first nor the last to think along these lines. Let me guess, you are in the "Brexit at all costs" camp?

Ref. the relationship between social standing and arrogance, I'm afraid that most of your previous objections prove that you've got the wrong end of the stick on that.
In fact, in several occasions, you applied the logic in reverse, i.e. whenever you felt like reading someone's comment as arrogant/preaching, you jumped in the conclusion that his/her comment was driven by some kind of "position".
Now, that's a non-sequitur, if I've ever seen one.

Ref. housewives, of course I don't realize my insult, because there's none at all.
I only mentioned that type of forum as an example of a place whose members are unlikely to be as wealthy as in a mobo forum, nothing else.
This is a generalization of course, and as such bound to be proved wrong sometimes, but why insulting?
If in you mind wealthier implies "better" (in which sense, btw?), well, that's your own frustration, not mine.

Not forgetting the fact that anyone who owns a bottomless money pit motor boat cannot be wealthy by definition:(

Ah yes the bottomless money pit, Boat - Bring Out Another Tenthousand. Unfortunately the general impression is that anyone who has a boat (or several) is wealthy. In Perth the state government is hiking up the cost of department of transport pens by 11% PER YEAR because apparently we are all rich. Needless to say boats are being sold in droves by people that barely use them and are by definition not wealthy. Its killing boating now here, but there are some bargains to be had 'cause people want shot of them and the expenses...

A lot of boat owners I know make different financial choices to other non boat owners. I own 2 boats a 45 footer bought cheap and a 6m aluminium cuddy cabin boat I have had for 12 years and is great for towing to the remote places we have here. Am I wealthy? Hell no, opposite actually, but I choose not to have a new car every couple of years, I choose not to pee my money up the wall that others do, and I work bloody hard for what money I do get, as others on here do too. I put sufficient funds to one side each month to cover pen fees, insurance and maintenance, which helps me manage costs.

Sure there are some on here that are obviously wealthy (either by working hard or by working hard and being lucky along the way) but I see a lot of good free advice and some outstanding generosity. I don't see anything other that their considered opinion generally. Whether or not I agree is my problem or should I say my opinion...

The issue with thread drifts and constantly shooting opinions down is that it's these people that stop posting first and bang.. there goes the the value of the forum. In my time here which is only a couple of years, some outstanding contributors with huge knowledge of specific engines etc have drifted away. That's Sad...

My 2 cents worth - there’s a real difference between shooting down an opinion - (inevitable on a forum) - and being downright rude on a personal level.
I’m guilty of both but that’s the disconnected nature of the connected environment, as it were.
And really, can you call truly call yourself forum alumni if you’ve not been on the blowy end of JFM’s best hairdryer treatment? ;)

The problem, I feel is when people are consistently nasty, disruptive or misinformed - of course the best response to this is to be pleasant or offer no response - but that’s really hard sometimes! Would dear Dr King really have believed that light could drive out darkness if he’d been on Twitter?

Perhaps the best way to deal with the darker side the forum is to have a filter, try not to be too serious or sensitive and enjoy the show?

And regarding wealth - having been poor and now moderately wealthy - I’m not sure that my IQ has improved over time but anyone who says money doesn’t buy happiness never had any money! :)

As my mother says, if youre going to be miserable, better to be miserable in comfort!

Far too much to read... Cant be bothered

In hindsight, I must say that this is a good point.
If I may steal (and adjust a tiny bit) an old cliché, sometimes I don't care belonging to a club that accepts people like us as members...

Part of the problem I feel is the antiquated software on which these fora appear to be run. Others with which I am familiar have two features that I think could help cope with the persistent fools:

A like/dislike and agree/disagree flag system that, giving totals, makes it petty obvious to even a new poster where an individual has a dodgy track record and as a side effect obviates the +1 sort of post than one has to resort to on here to indicate agreement.

A proper ignore function that cuts out not only their posts but also quotes of their posts - can lead to occasionally rather odd reading threads but it is better than the system implemented here.

Can't see it happening in a hurry but one can hope.

Look what you've started here Roy!

Mate
He’s just a Sparky from Stoke
We gorra cut him slack
But I can’t comment really properly
Cos His Mrs make ace butties
Your chilli con carne ain’t far behind like
The Forai are great
Met so many proper people off it and had great advice to boot over the years
Dished some shite out too
As yer do!
The rude people are rare really on here
Mostly fade away anyway
Especially if the ‘bait’ they tender is ignored
Thing is
97% of us have never met for real
So it’s not like insulting people in the Pub etc face to face
‘Ere mush, see you outside’ etc if the job goes pear shaped etc
Getting wound up on a Forum is bollocks
Christ sake
The Real World is hard enough
Like just now
My bloody cooker oven thingy has just packed in, half through my experimental Spag Bol
How life threatening is that?
Mrs is waiting
Knife and fork Prone
Her bloody wheelchair had a puncture earlier
I got a bollocking for fixing it too slow!
My garlic bulbs had gone hard when started tonight’s prep for dinner
Should have shoved them in the wheelchair tyre!
Don’t argue peeps
Enjoy our hobby/ sport
It ain’t worth it
Leave it the Political People
Politicians are Proffesional ‘arguers’
We friggen Pay them like Mugs!
Today
I helped a fellow Forumite out
It was enjoyable
Enjoy this Forum folks
Don’t insult each other
Most don’t
That’s now it should be
IMHO
:encouragement:

I'm not a Forumite, you helped by not scratching my boat and giving me something to crow about. However I did note you drinking Aloe Vera in an attempt to beautify that horrid complexion. Give it up mate, nothing is "gorra" help that except maybe a steam iron.
