Yeah, awful wasn't it. I thought Martin Johnson and the boys looked a tad excruciated at anthem time. And half the 'boks had their eyes closed, as if they couldn't bear to look.

And what about those classy new Nike sponsored shirts ?

Good advert showing the quality of Nike products.

Close run thing in the first half too - if they hadn't missed those penalties...

Re: Shitty shirts

I like the idea of tight fitting shirts for soccer. Shirt tugging is one of the things that is ruining the game. While I am at it, there are two rules which soccer could adopt from my old sport, water polo :

Replace yellow and red cards by a sin bin - where you stay UNTIL the next goal is scored. (If no further goals scored, the penalty is carried over into the next match.) The bit in brackets isn't a water polo rule but seems like a good idea.

Waive the off-side rule. You would only be off-side if you are inside the penalty area. This would open up the game and probably allow for more goals.

As far as rugby is concerned, the rules seem to have got hopelessly complicated especially around a maul. Would the game deteriorate with fewer rules?

I also think that lifting a man in a line-out defeats the object of the line-out.

What I don't understand is why England persists in suffering the excriating God Save the Queen bolloxs.. If th1e English sing it then all the by rights all the Commonwealth teams should sing it too ... I really don't understand why England don't go for Jurusalem .. which is fab and much better music/words.. real rousing stuff .. which is what you want .. none of this namby pamby saving monarchs stuff..

And yes those chorists make even the best anthems sound like effing Stock Aiken and Waterman pap.. really sad..

How dare you suggest a replacement for the true English rugby national anthem which as any rugby chap knows is "Swing Low ..." :)

Ah yes I quite agree that Swing Low.. is the English Rugby anthem but I think it is high time England had it's own National anthem instead of making it's sporting teams etc wince! Anyway Swing Low Sweet Chariot is a Spritiual song from the American deep south.. so I would have thought it rather inappropriate as the English National Anthem???

Anyway how did Swing Low become the English Rugby Anthem?

It's a song beloved of rugby players in the 60's and 70's (and before for all I know ) which allowed team members to sing and mime obscenely when they were pissed. Later it just became a sort of pormanteau anthem for rugby players, then for England. I still remember all the actions but am unable to demonstrate them in type

Re: ps

Oh ye of little faith :)

England didn't play well against the yarpies and still won (although it may have been a different story if they hadn't been pulled back for a knock-on just before Will demonstrated the skills he learned from "The Goat")

The boys can play a lot better than that as was demonstrated when we last played "down under", beat the AB's at the "house of pain" and 3 tries to 1 against the wallys :)

Re: beating the all blacks

Now there some team motivation for you.. should e-mail the team that you will be demonstrating the "motions" what greater motivation could you give them???.. I will be watching closely.. PS I do know them too but wouldn't boast about it for fear of making a the YBW boards from collapsing in a chaos of jumbled asp, java and html.. which they appear to come pretty close to anyway/forums/images/icons/wink.gif... rather like the Welsh [sob sob]
