Changed from Thornycroft T80 to a T95 (35hp - 39hp).
Contact Thornycroft ( I talked to Mike ) and discuss. I got a good trade-in and they were able to supply new engine with feet in exactly the same place as old engine. Makes re-fitting a doddle.
I've just replaced the T90(BMC 1500) in my Moody 33 with a Beta 25hp. (Theoretically it only needed 17HP). More then enough power. The problem with the M33 is that you cannot swing a larger prop than 13" Ø - and that is pushing your luck according to the 'book', without cutting a groove in the hull! With that restriction it was pointless in fitting an equivalent size engine as the original BMC 1500(35hp).
I looked at all the engines available and decided that the Beta was the best value, taking into account servicing, spares, reputation etc etc. Also Beta made the engine feet wider to suit the original engine bearers for a small extra sum. I still had to add a glassed in bearer on top but that was easy compared to removing & replacing the bearers.
Bear in mind you will have to replace the exhaust system, perhaps upgrade the fuel system, and while you are at it replace the sound proofing and fit a non-drip stern gland.

17hp? Don't think your calculations are reasonable. Nowadays 4hp - 5hp per ton is considered appropriate hp/ton. A Moody 33 weighs a good 5 tonnes stocked up with cruising gear and water. Leaves nothing in reserve for plugging into a strong headwind and lumpy sea.
I would say 25hp is on the limit. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
