This weekend & fishing questions!

All,

I am praying for good weather this weekend as the boys have a green card! We are thinking of going out in the Solent for spin somewhere and then anchor up for a spot of sea fishing and maybe (if really brave) a spot of skiing and then on to cowes for the night Anyone else out?
Where is good to fish in the solent? (is that a silly question?) and what is the best depth and bait to use?

Use your fishfinder and look for some broken ground preferably on or around a bank, in ideally 30ft plus of water and fish the downtide side of it If you use frozen mackerel you should be ok for whiting and dogfish, use luworm and squid cocktail for cod and rays or if you catch a pouting leave it on the hook for a chance of a good cod or conger,

I know I'm on the other side of the world , but I find a jig is handy to have when the bait runs out . I find that if there are fish around the jig will catch some.

Lures and jigs do work here in certain conditions,preferably clean and reasonably clear water, certainly not the case in the Solent, or Bristol Channel for that matter!! this time of year the water is too dark ,dirty, and murky for lures to be really affective, IMHO, of course.

A jig is a type of lure that is lowered to the bottom and then raised a bit and then jerked upwards and let flutter down; they mimic injured fish. The main difference from a lure or spinner is that it is more streamlined and operates vertically whereas lures operate horizontally. They do tend to work better in clear water but I have had success with them in murky water once we have got onto some fish.

Fish off West Lepe as the water drops off.
Use calamari squid, or 2 or 3 on a strong hook, pennel rigged if you know how. I use a couple of 8/0 or 10/0 Mustad O'Shaunessy (?) hooks on 100lb mono trace in case of congers.
2 weeks ago they were pulling up a lot of very good cod in this area during the Lymington byob comp - well from the radio chat I think they were in that comp 'cos they wern't in the Poole based one I was fishing! Tides should be similar too.
