This seems outstanding value

It was a 62 that I fancied a few years ago when we were looking - that link brought back memories.
SWMBO didn't like the lower galley.
We then found a nice Princess 61 so that was the driving force.
Then we went to SIBS and the salesman talked us out of a used P61 into a new P67 or a new P64.
I remember asking you which one we should buy.

BTW - side doors are not a big selling point.
OTOH flybridge stairs are definitely on the shopping list.
See how much we used yours on the delivery trip? - All the time.

Yep, interesting to see them come below £200k. That one is hull #2 or 3. The first 3 had cats due to delay in getting Volvo D12 700s in 2001; the D12 was aviaalbe in 675hp but the 700 came later. It isn't hull #1 (that one is easy to spot) so it must be #2 or #3

The sq 58 had a single side door, stbd side. The earlier 55 also had a single side door, port side. The internal staircase was excellent on both boats

It had 2 crew utility cabins and the aft one woukd take a seakeeper but you lose the cabin as a place to sleep. I think a seakeeper would go in the lazerette aft of engine room, if you move the batteries. You'd have to think hard about where to place the batteries but I think it could be done - there is space to port side of genset where you could stack 4 batteries and another 2 could go in forward bilge or far stbd side of engine room, and at a push there is space between the engines. A 5 cabin seakeepered sq58 would be an excellent cruising machine imho

100% agreed, particularly if the gyro could be positioned as you envisage.
And even if the VP D12 are in my understanding rather solid engines, I'd rather have yellow than green stuff in my e/r.
Or is there any other drawback in these earlier models?

I get the yellow/green thing generally (they are white/white of course!) but the D12 is particularly good and the C12 somewhat ok rather than a "star " of the cat line up like C18 and C32. (Very newest Sq58 with Cats, of which only a handful built, have C15 btw). So I think I would be indifferent between yellow and green on a 10 yrs old sq58. There are plenty of drawbacks of these early models but they are "surface" things like cabin lining fabric glue failing, and all of that sort of stuff

Oi, speak for yourself. I know that your couple of 12V monsters are white (and rightly so, of course), but I for one still have a "yellow cat" spray can in my toolbox! :D

On a more serious note, I thought (but I wouldn't swear to it) that these babies are actually 3406, rather than C12.
And AFAIK, the 3406 indeed were among the Cat "stars", back in their days.
But happy to stand corrected on both counts by our resident engines gurus...

Engine Porn
Well, nothing special really, I just picked the two engine pics from the ad linked in the OP.
With apologies for the large size, but I couldn't find any smaller ones that were linkable, and didn't want to bother copying resizing and uploading again... :)

Incidentally, Liguria seems to be the home of the cheapest Brit boats on the planet. Why is that?
Is it? My impression is that cheap used boats can be found just about anywhere, these days...
But fwiw, the IT FL dealer was based in Liguria.

It's dark outside and there's nowt but rubbish on TV :)
Agree the D12 is a good egg along side the C12 and the "cat 660" of that genre .
MAN did a12L 6 cylinder too 2001 - 610 hp - up lifted to 700 hp in 2003 ( this is what I have ) stroked to 12.8 L
Common railed in 2005 -remained R6 in 2005 @ 800 hp .
12 ish L for. 45-60 ftr is a popular node .

Here,s some more boat porn

B4 new air filters

After new Air filters -note the hand pump +below it a diverter valve so you can pump out the engine oil or gearbox easy-peasy now

Reverse view showing ladder + Geny +two of the fuel tanks either side .( old pic )
Note the Geny has its own battery next to it and to the R of that the yellow box is its own dedicated bat charger that runs off 220v and - so kinda chargers itself up when on .
Pleased to report no issues what so ever first season -put 66 hrs on

Akshualy, the 3406 was a different animal, in the 15 rather than 12 liters territory.
I can't swear from the above pics alone (and the ad specs are useless) that it's what's the above Sq68 has in her e/r, but they smell to me more of 3406 than C12...

Yup, and this seems to say 3405 was indeed on the options list at launch of the boat

Somewhere there is an MBY article from 2001 called "Ice Maiden" where they test hull #1, en route to Dusseldorf show, covered in snow. The first 3 boats had Cats, and this article will say which Cat engine was installed in hull #1, which will I guess be the same as hulls 2+3, ie this one. I have the article somewhere...!

Ice Maiden Squadron 58.jpg

According to the Squadron 58 test by Dave Marsh in MBY July 2001 the engines are 3460E CATS 800hp.
I have tried to attach a page from the article but it may not be big enough to read.

Ermm... Not for my eyes, surely! :)
Otoh, I for one would be interested to read the whole test, but I guess that asking a scanned copy isn't politically correct... :o

Apologies for the size of the print but its the first time I have had a go at attaching on here.
PM your e-mail and I will forward on.

Thanks MJGH - that answers it. I have that article too, somewhere. I remember reading it when it came out, and soon after visiting the factory and buying a sq58

Very kind of you, thanks a lot for an interesting reading.
I must say that also nowadays, I can't think of a 17m P boat with a better layout and use of spaces - I even disagree to some extent with their only criticism, i.e. the small dinette.
Mid cabin aside of course, which most folks now take for granted at that size, but is actually (imho) not worth stealing all the space it takes, on boats up to 60' or so.

Another thing that grabbed my attention is the performance table, that starts at 1200rpm/12.4 knots.
Obviously, back in those days (when I had just moved to a pure D boat!), pootling was not even considered worth mentioning.
The times they are a-changin', I reckon... :)
