This month's expert on board videos

Easier said than done really, not great seeing something you've worked hard on, thought would be good and informative (if not to all than at least to some) being torn apart when I've just got to work. I realise I'm no Steven Spielberg, it's a bit of fun video to show what Tom is writing about.

I think there is a lot of merit in producing some very simple, basic training videos - just need a bit more practice /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

I think there is too which is why I make the effort. I was trying to keep it simple, I was going to do cut-aways, but it soon became apparent if I spent as much time as I wanted we wouldn't be able to test the three boats in the day that we needed for the feature, so the content of the mag took priority.

Like everything it's just trying to find a way of fitting the video work into our magazine work without it taking over, sometimes it works, sometime it doesn't.

We are aware of the limitations of the video equipment, I'd like a new HD video camera, that we can get an external mic into. But they again I'd also like more money, longer holidays and a fast car!!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Sometimes you just have to make do with what you've got /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

A wider angle lens would have helped, as would another camera

Or a remote microphone on Tom's jacket?

I refer the honourable gentleman to the reply I gave some moments before

Snooks wrote:

Yes we would like a lapel mic, the sound quality is poor we know that (but it still understandable), the camera we use at the moment doesn't have a "mic in", and until this camera dies we won't be getting another one, most of the time we add a sound track over it so sound isn't usually important.

Hi Graham
For what it's worth, some of us have enjoyed the video content but chose not to go againt the vocal types for the sake of a quiet life. The constructive comments echo my thoughts so no need to repeat them, but don't let the doomsayers put you off doing it again, for those that didn't crew for Noah it's very helpful.

Oops.

Lazy bugger watches the videos but can't be arsed with reading all those words! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: This month\'s expert on board videos

Well done Snooks, I like Tom's easy manner, he's explained the drawback, and benefit of propwalk well.

Our clever dick skippers should produce their own films, and then we might compare.

More please.

That's the point I was going to make. For your next lesson, ask the know-it-alls on here to produce a video on their mobile phones & then you can edit the best bits into a lesson. Reward any used with a 12month sub to the mag of their choice.

BTW when is Tom going to give us another series of Boatyard? I loved that programme, but have seen them all several times over now - and Floating Kitchen with Simon and 2 series of Get Afloat with Anton. We seriously need another quality boating programme on the telly.

Sorry. I wasn't knocking the production standards (I think the videos were adequate and perfectly watchable), but TC really needs to think about what he's going to say and do in this format - it's not like he's got half an hour to waffle on about "Left handed props" and have a mini debate with himself about how surprising that is, and then ignore the evidence.

It needs to be structured and concise: This is how to get an feel for the effect whilst moored up.... / This is what it looks like on the water (filmed from somewhere off the boat, with a broad view where you can still see what he's doing with the tiller & throttle... / Here's how to steer in reverse (shot as previous).... / Here's how to use the effect when: a) turning with the prop-walk, b) turning against it (if you have to), c) Coming alongside a quay or pontoon, d) Mooring to a finger pontoon. Would probably need a voice-over, rather than live sound (except for the 'roaring' engine /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif)

Re: This month\'s expert on board videos

I just love watching videos of boats - whether they're aimed at novices, experts or dumbed down for a wider public audience. I agree with some of the constructive comments above and think some of the others were uncalled for. Thanks for posting the videos and keep up the good work /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: This month\'s expert on board videos

Enjoyed it, thanks for your efforts.
Ignore the armchair admirals; most of us do.
Next time give Sir Tom a Twister though

I think you and others are missing the point of these videos of Graham's. The exercises he films are YM practicals and tests and are conducted first and foremost for the written word.

As a bye-product, Graham takes a video camera and from time to time videos what's going on. These are not set up for video - they are not scripted, the people taking part are not professionals at filming. They are not stand-alone instructional videos and are not intended to be so. They do, however, at their best, offer a bit of added value and show how YM go about things. More often than not a bit of moving picture clarifies the stills and words that appear in YM, but they must be read/watched as companion pieces.

I was involved in filming for an internet TV programme as many of you will know. To do the job properly for video takes at least a day on top of the time taken to do the YM written version and ideally involves a presenter, an owner or other person for the presenter to engage with, and a producer and cameraman. Then you will get your concise, well-edited instructionall video. To see how it looks go toYachting TV

Here's what is now the 3rd in the series, for those who don't like Tom, he's not in this one /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif ...I've just taken bits of his text and added them over some of the other footage that was taken that that day.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/VDnJo2usn1I&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/VDnJo2usn1I&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Still not professional I know, but it's the best you're getting from me for the moment /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: This month\'s expert on board videos

Sneaky /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
That's the only way I can get on to my mooring, all boats are lined up either side of the pontoon with only a couple of feet each end. Tried all sorts of ways to get on but that's the only way that works for me.

Couldn't agree more about having moving pictures, but I don't get YM often, so haven't read the bit that goes with this - possibly it would make more sense if I had. My particular jibe was at the blustering TC. I have immense respect for the man, and he can sometimes put things across very well, but (IMHO) this wasn't one of those occasions /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I think the format is useful with the current production quality - I just think it needs a bit of editing (like Snooks' 3rd video).

I'm a great fan of Yachting TV and would urge others to have a look too - I think their instructional videos are really good, and can appreciate the work that's gone into them (they're obviously *not* taken on the hoof whilst doing something else - I don't understand how they make any money, though, but that's a different matter). But I don't think you need to even aspire to that standard to get the point across in these 'snippets' - just make sure the point is made clearly (by live sound, voice-over, titles, or whatever is appropriate).

Perhaps I should read YM every month /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I did indeed just do that, Well I just edited it, I didn't go and film it /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif I read the comments and remembered the other footage I had...It was on my computer already, I realised at the time a wider view was needed. However the reversing up wind and down wind just show a boat going though the frame backwards on way then backwards the other /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif so they were left on the cutting room floor. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Anyway it's the boatshow tomorrow, I must get off home...Good night /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
