... having just watched some fishermen trying to refit the wood panelling on the inside of their wheelhouse, can anyone explain why they were using a spirit level - seeing as their boat was still in the water.

Wouldn't it be a case of 'yep the bubble's in the middle, no it's not - opps yes it is, no it isn't ........"

Thats not a stupid question at all. It shows you want to understand and shows an aptitude towards learning. Your to be congratulated. Now I could go into the physics of it, but It'll get really boring and long winded. To really understand you have to know how a spirit level is made an works. Its a bit more than "bubble in between the lines". Lets just say its a man thing!

OK, to hell with it. Unbolt it and we'll use it as an anchor!

POSSIBILITY 1:
Blokes don't like admitting that they're wrong, or worse.that they haven't a clue how to do something. If they hadn't waved a ineffectual spirit level around they'd be forced to admit they hadn't a clue. If using a spirit level is good enough for Bob The Builder...
POSSIBILITY 2:
What a stupid, girly question.

It's obvious Pauline. If the bubble is at the top, they know they've got it the right way round.

Re: This is a stupid girly question but ....

The obvious answer is that they were purely using the spirit level as a convenient straight edge, not as a level. Typical of women to jump to hasty conclusions!!

Re: This is a stupid girly question but ....

Even on a fairly tender craft. If one has two spirit levels it is possible to set a particular reference face level by using the moveable ballast (moving people about) and one of the levels. This then sets the boat level. The second level can then be used to set up whatever requires to be horizontal or vertical as appropriate.
Dont you think recently there has been a higher proportion of stuped boys than girls on those forums?.
