This made the boating costs this year worth it

..................................and all of sudden you have a reason to enjoy your boating again, and they come complete with a whole set of worries and concerns you never even knew existed.
Almost ? makes it worth while having kids and watching them turn you hair grey and emptying your bank account, just imagine how much bigger the boat you could have had by now. :):):) and almost certainly populated with a crew of young bikini clad ladies !

As of this year we now have 5 grandchildren aged 8 and under and including two new arrivals in August this year.
4 of them are in one household together with a dog . It's a joy but manic most of the time.

As of this year we have Zero Children and will never have any Grand Children. The Child we almost had sadly passed away before birth............. It was not to be.................. Perhaps that is why I have so many boats.
I’m very sorry to hear that. Have you considered fostering? You could end up with tens of virtual grandchildren. Foster carers are amazing people who transform lives.

We considered and did several things. In the end you just have to accept it. We are almost 60 now so just looking forward to old age on our own .

There are many many people in our situation. The thing is many people don't realise and assume all sorts of things that are usually wrong..... Like so many things it is what it is.

Interesting thing is my Father had 13 Brothers and Sisters so I am not short of a cousin or two.

Funny how life appears so simple when you are young. It's only with age and life experience that you realise just how tricky life can be and how many curve balls of all shapes and sizes get thrown into people's lives. Not the same as you Big Plums, but my daughter's friend was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer a few months back aged 37. She has responded well to treatment and her outlook is good.
As all we old farts know, life is far from simple.

Elessar, just realised just how down I have made this thread after your joyous post and lovely photo. My first grandchild arrived at the end of October, I look forward to moments like yours.
Merry Christmas.

All the best comedies have sadness in. Shakespeare knew that and think of the last blackadder. Life is full of contrast and we appreciate it all the more because of that. Merry Christmas to you too. And Bigplumbs of course. (Edited as I put the wrong forumite beginning with B so it made no sense - but happy Christmas to all!!)

No kids, no regrets.

I feel sorry for those that long for them but for whatever reason, it doesn't happen

Yep. Fill em up with their body weight in haribo and send them back.
and good luck asking them to not repeat any unfortunate language they may have over heard or comments regards the capabilities of their parents !

"The reason grandparents and grandchildren get along so well is that they have a common enemy."

Boats and saving money are not very often heard in the same sentence ;)
We have lost many £tens of thousands over the past 30 years spent on changing to bigger boats, repairing boats, excessive marina costs, fuel costs etc etc. Do we regret it…..absolutely not! There is something magical about boat ownership, something we would never have missed for the world. Luckily we still managed to pay off our mortgage at the same time as keep a boat on the south coast.

I wonder what you might have done with the money had you not have had a boat

Look on the bright side. Think of all that money I have saved over the years
