I have been reading and contributing on to this forum since either 1997 or 1998. Then I had a Bruce Roberts, working in London, sailing in the East coast and having the boat moored at Brightlingsea. This forum has always been fresh with ideas and sometimes controversial which adds to make it more interesting and often amusing. No doubt I will carry on reading and replying another 15 years. Time flies........

15years ?? looks like you joined july 2009 oops !

Ditto - i was one of the first to use it back in 1997 (i think) as I was working with YM at the time, but mine still says May 2001.

Wasn't there some kind of ruction that caused Scuttlebutt to be closed for a while in 2001? I guess that would have reset everything. I've always meant to start a lounge thread asking what happened.

I think joining dates have been reset a couple of times. The 'ruction' occurred when some posters found they could log in as somebody else and post controversial responses to queries, then log back in as themselves to be outraged. Amusing at first but it got completely out of hand. Forums were closed for a week or two while new security measures were introduced.

Congratulations! As a relative newby that is some record. I have taken the oppertunity to reply to your thread as this will be my two thousandth post-a long way off yours I imagine. Well Done.

IIRC at the very beginning the "forum" was a simple central column with a not too orderly accumulation of threads, questions and answers, mostly in black and white.
At that time it was possible to post without registration, just indicating an imaginary email address like me@myself.com, which of course did not provide enough identity protection.
Then something happened, maybe twice, and registration was made compulsory, last time was 2001.

In all that time what was your most memorable thread?

The chap who proposed to pebble-dash his boat; also, they were some strange and colourful characters and there were lots of arguments, some pretty nasty too. Nowadays the forum is much more civilised.
