I just wanted to share a small success story.

On our Westerly Storm we have a plumbing set up with a single pump emptying both the Lavac toilet and the holding tank. I have never wanted to understand this system, as understanding inevitably leads to managing blockages, and left it all to samwise, formerly of this forum. Sam suffered a stroke a couple of years ago which affected his language very badly and now he can't explain the set-up to me, and the damn thing has (inevitably) stopped working again. We spent a very cross day on board last weekend while I crawled around the cockpit locker and endeavoured to understand what went where and why, and Sam got fed up because I didn't understand his explanations.

Last night I was inspired. I searched on here for posts from "samwise" mentioning "Lavac". And behold in 2009 he suffered a similar problem and posted on here http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?212057-Lavac-puzzle a simple explanation of what went where. Fantastic. Together with a helpful diagram on the Lavac website which seems to be the right one, and the responses posted on here at the time, I now have some idea of where to look.

The loo isn't working yet, but at least I now have some hope of getting it right....

Please give my regards to Samwise. I thought he had been quiet lately but hadn't known the reason. I wish him a full recovery & congratulate you on your freshly acquired skills!

Just another thought, do you not use pencil & pad for him to give you instructions, diagrams etc?

That is brilliant. I had a problem at work with a man who lost his language after a stroke and it was really hard for him to access his online banking. The banks were very slow to help.

We are all leaving a a really positive legacy with these posts, Facebook, email and the like. I wonder if anyone will care to view anything about me after I'm gone?

It muse be a relief to get your plumbing sorted, inspired indeed!

Thank you Searush. It's a slow and painful process and we don't know how much further he will improve - but that doesn't stop us from trying. Yes, we use pencil and paper, but drawing diagrams must live in the same part of the brain as language since in this case he couldn't draw anything which helped, although he was able to recognise which of the Lavac approved layouts was the correct one. Writing is even worse affected than speech.

PabloPicasso, don't mention banking and especially not Santander. It has been an excruciatingly painful process but fortunately I now have power of attorney over everything that matters and we have closed down the accounts from the least helpful providers!
