This Dont happen very Often

So was the work done over two days ?

To be honest I have no idea. On the broads many boat companies do loads of work at the various marinas and this firm is regularly at my marina. Hence he can skip from boat to boat.

For example the way he did the leg (not part of this bill) is he removes it to his workshop along with several others and when the weather is pants he works on the legs inside then takes it back and puts it back on.

The firm will have worked on more KAD 32's than I have had hot dinners and it is all very routine for them. All the checking he does was never even asked for but he says he always does it as it is the correct thing to do. Much of the checking I actually think he doesn't actually charge for.

It is a family run firm and I think they are very fair people with what I would call a good old Norfolk attitude.

I am from Suffolk and I know several people who do pieces of work for others and when asked how much the answer is very often..... Give us a tenner boy that will do me. It dont make you rich but it can make you feel very good...............which can be worth much more than money

Just after the main lockdown my Brothers friend wanted to buy one of My/My brothers boats ........ I said I would not sell it to him as it is a classic and needed lots of work to make it safe. This chap I fear does not own a spanner or indeed the ability to wield it if he had one. Instead I said I would repair the boat and make it good to go and he could use it as much as he liked. After about 30 hours it was all done and good to go. He wanted to pay for my time but I said it was still my boat so that would not be right. He asked me what I liked to drink and the week later a delivery from Asda arrived. I had more joy drinking that cider and smoking the cigars than if ever he had given me payent. He did of course pay for all the parts etc I bought.

I'm not sure Bruce would save a ton of money but he'd save a day of his life not staring at a handful of electrical connections on a 4 cylinder diesel!

well....his KADs should be running on all 6 cylinders so clearly he’s up to his ears again.....or another poor soul has succumbed to his expertise ???

He knows I’m only kidding......if it wasn’t for his “journey”.....how would the rest of us avoid disaster ?

Well I am gobsmacked. On that score if he had done all that and done a good job I'd hire him too. But my estimate stands, or tell me where I have over budgeted on time.

This is what I fear. I too have just a so called handful of connections but testing all connections is not just plugs. There is the 220V shorepower system, RCD, earth leakage / stray current. Earth connections, switches, bilge floats, PAT etc etc. To go through a boat and say you have tested all the electrical systems in 20 minutes by checking the loom plugs is not checking the electrics.

2hrs to do an oil change..would you expect a mechanic to sit there and watch the oil being extracted and do nothing else in that time? And 30 minutes for an impeller change?! And all day to check electrical connections, surely if they are seen to be working, then why check them?
The best mechanic I know works on the basis of if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

I would ask the engineer if he did gardening

Out of interest is that price using Volvo penta parts, if not I would want to check what parts were fitted, e.g. third party impellers don't last well according to some posts on this forum in the past.

2hrs to do an oil change - you pretty much need to keep pumping every couple minutes. Yes they could do tappets for example at the same time but everything slows down accordingly.
30 min for an impeller change,,,,, very eaily
A check is a check, not an observation. I wont pay for an observation
The best mechanic you know is reactive and not proactive. I'd say he's the best you know but certainly not the best. Go on, embarrass me with a name but my stance wont change on that score.

I might add I would be concerned about an engineer multi tasking certain jobs. This is where mistakes and oversight creeps in. I certainly dont multitask. I've learnt the hard way.

I also don’t multitask, ask the wife
