At the moment we are in La Gomera in our Westerly Konsort. Next month we want to sail to Cape Verde and then Brasil. Our insurer Knox-Johnson is refusing to insure us for this trip "because of the size and value of the boat". Other companies I tried via the internet gave negative replies also.
Now we reduced our wish to Third Party Insurance only. After all, our small size should have no bearing on any damage we might do to others...But we still get negative replies...
Has anyone with an under 30 feet boat got insurance for crossing the Atlantic and South America? With whom? Thank you for any leads...Gina, Yacht ´Pedroma´.

Hola Gina,

We´re just round the corner from you in Las Palmas actually.

Our boat is 28 ft & we´re insured through Pantaenius. They´re pretty good & will basically insure you for most things you want to do, as long as it´s not really stupid. Very little restrictions either (singlehanding/no of crew for ocean passages etc), although we were surprised to find they wouldn´t cover us for W. Coast of Africa.

We were also about to upgrade our insurance for the Atlantic crossing + Caribbean & Pacific. For the Atlantic crossing they charge a 1 off extra premium of about 380 GBP (which also covers you for Cape Verde). For the Pacific they also made no quibbles about our size, only quoting us a somewhat hefty 1700 GBP per year premium.

Because of these huge costs, we´ve decided to also go for 3rd party only - 100 GBP per year, worldwide, no restrictions.

They have an office in Plymouth, amongst other places.

I can´t imagine you having a problem with them.

Hope that helps. Might even bump into you in Cape Verde!
