so last weekend was the third edition of the Malta Boat Show, held again in a different place but this was also in a great setting
I visited three boats of similar size albeit slightly larger to myn which I will go on and describe, plus from a friend a smaller Crownline 250 CR
this year edition was held in the Grand Harbout setting in Birgu, in the deeper setting of Grand Harbour Marina, last year it was in the deeper South part of Grand Harbout in Marsa, and the first edition was held in Marsamxetto Harbour in Floriana in the Hotel Excelsion Marina
boat of the show was the grey colored Azimut 62S
so I visited three similar sized boats the Fairline 38 Targa, Riviera 3600 Sport Yacht Series II, and Sealine SC35 which are a couple foot larger to mine, my Gobbi 335 SC is 36 feet overall, with the Riviera beining 38feet Fline 39feet and Sealine 38 feet but over 40 feet with the platform as for the show boat
Fairline 38 Targa
this one was surely by far the fineshed and fitted of the three boats I viewed with a cherry interior but personally I would have prefared to see it with oak, the cockpit is a bit smaller to what it looks on the brochure but also from behind in the marina, still the wetbar is very nice and I like the settees all to port setting, the forward stateroom has by far the biggest sized berth of the boats I visited altough its entrance door is really made for small people, saloon inside is also small, the aft cabin in spacious and apart the IPS powered Riviera with saloon up was the most spacious, side deck are a bit thin in the making but I do like the quality of the fitting like windows used, steel quality of the portholes, and most of all the Italian styled railing with straight bars, unfortunatly i could not see any technical stull like stringers, and engine room as like my boat you have to dismantle a cockpit (table off, seat cushions etc) ah full points on the bathing platform setting too, minus point for really a high about 1 foot from water line exhaust setting
Positive
finishing, forward cabin, exterior wet bar setting, interior galley with gas hob
Negative
tight side decks, generator exhaust 1 foot above waterline, smallish thin master cabin door
Riviera 3600 Sport Yacht Series II
I love the Riviera setting of having a saloon up with living all above and cabins below, the saloon is really a place to be and the aft deck is really spacious for a boat this size, platform is ok of moderate dimension but you can stow a tender there, I dont like much the passarelle to port side instead of being located centrally (like Fline 38Targa) altough I could live with it as it does work better, the mid cabin is a real three berther and a medium sized adult could stay on the third to the lenght berth, and the double is spacious too, the fore cabin is a bit small for real normal sized people, the shower head is really a joy to be with a plexiglass seperation to the head area, they could make a cabin there, engine room is of good dimensions and you can inspect all with a hatch or open it all, the disappointment is a bit the single burner galley with electic, I would also like a ladder in the bathing platform altough it boat had a water maker fitted too plus an 9kw Onan Genny, the pivoting window does score points as do the decks passeway, the problem here is versus the Farline and Sealine this costs you 100.000 EUROS more with D4 300hp IPS400 engines, but the standard equipment is also better to the English
Positive
upper saloon with pivoting window joining all, aft cabin, engine room, shower head, side deck connetction
Negative
galley hob, small fore berth, needs ladder from engine room hatch
Sealine SC35
the one on show was yellow hulled with an extended bathing platform option, I like the flush deck of the cockpit, inside the galley and saloon are spacious but actually after turning a bit around the light colors do increase the visual size, boat was finish with choclate colored oak, the shower head is spacious may be a bit more to the Riviera, I did not like the thing of the railing angled a bit to the outside but may be on practical reasons for some people it works better, I also dont like where the passarelle would stay if ordered as there is no real place for it, the extended optional b/platform could have been better integrated altout it is of enourmous dimension, I think it adds another 2 feet+ so that makes the SC35 has an LOA above 40 feet, the cabins are IMO small and the fore cabin double altough slightly wider to the Riviera has still the same length meaning your feet will hanging out, the aft cabin is marketed as a three berther but I think this is slightly misleading as that third berth is really only suiltable for a small child max 10 years old, I think Sealine should make it setted as a settee inorder for guest to relax on it more then market is as a third berth which in fact it is not, the engine room was neater to the Riviera but similar size, easy for engine inspection altough as someone pointed out if you need to take out an engine you need to starting cutting, finishing and fittings where not far away from Fairline as one would think, another plus was the helm which does have a very good visibility...
Positive
flushed decked cockpit, helm visibility, interior saloon galley, shower head, engine room neatness space
Negative
small fore cabin berth, small third aft cabin berth, optional extended platform could have been integrated better
I would also have liked to visit the Atlantis 35 Plus has a flush decked cockpit too, but still the small bathing platform on this boat makes it look like a step down to me...
the where also the Beneteau 37 MC hard top version, which I visited in the 2007 show in open form, nice aft cabin fore cabin, altough it is a bit less quality finished to all the above, in 2007 I also visited the Elan 35 HT nice but cramped, and Atlantis 39 highly finished and super two head light colored oak interior but strange cockpit and small bathing platform which does not work for me
