The season got off to a brilliant start - 34 consecutive nights on the boat and the joys of Holland. Personal circumstances have meant that I've only been out 4 or 5 times since early July and two of those trips were to W. Mersea! The only decent sail was with my son in Wales - 2 days down the coast in great weather. Even when circumstances here permitted a quick trip the weather has been rubbish. Circumstances now mitigate against a sailing trip to Walton next weekend and I can foresee many and frequent trips to Guys Hospital over the next few weeks as my daughter fights transplant rejection. Top priority of course and not a moments hesitation.

So I'm thinking of having the boat lifted and calling it a day until the spring. I left the boat in for the past two winters and they were the coldest in decades and a waste of time. Can't quite bring myself to do it - once last sail please.

Some years just don't work out. But the next is normally better. I've had a rubbish year sailing wise and not even a good excuse. I wish your daughter a speedy victory over her troubles.

I have the crane and lorry booked for the 25th on the basis of going away and now they are asking me to postpone!

Roger, just invent a project list, and pretend you are going to address all those projects, and therefore need the boat out to be able to do these jobs properly.

Well, thats what I do anyway.

Roger,

So sorry to hear about your daughter. I hope it all works out well.

Keeping the boat in the water over the winter sounds like a complication you could do without. Put a positive slant on your decision to take her out of the water (FC's list of things to do is rather easy to fail on, so try a positive reason which doesn't involve guilt for not doing jobs!).

Next year will be better!

Really sorry to hear it all Roger - I hope it gets sorted as soon as. I think the boat idea out with a justifying list of jobs is a good one - as others have said, you have other things to think about. If you then do find a bit of spare time and fancy a sail, you have my number :).

Best wishes to you all Roger.

On the up side - I've had a **** year too, but will definitely be leaving Black Magic in and I am always looking for winter crew for those delightful sunny winter days. Just shout if you find yourself with opportunity and fancy a day sail - x

Best wishes with all this, Roger.
I wasn't too good at putting family first when I was in gainful employment but have tried hard to make up for it since, and sailing does get to take a back seat as a result.
We all keep going on great memories of this sail, that cruise, special moments afloat that keep us going when we have to be somewhere else. I've not sailed much at all since July either, but hey ho there's always next year!

Thanks for your kind comments everyone. I was feeling a bit gloomy. One more sail then she's out of the water, mast unstepped. Plenty of jobs to do in between armchair cruising and making 2011 plans. You have made me feel much better - that's what friends do. Cheers.

I hope everything works out for your daughter Roger.

If you find yourself at a loose end and fancy a cuppa, I'll be the bloke scratching his head with an oily hand at Sutton wharf most weekends between now and April...I am picking up the new (to me) engine on Friday, and as yet I have'nt got a clue what to do with it, dont even know that it will fit for definate

Think this refit will be erm...organic...:o
