Thinking about going further next summer?

Having too many charts and a SWMBO who said no to selling the house at the start of the year and not the right weather/crew/time interval has made me think about otherways of getting further: Trailer sailer, big old lorry to put her on (not SWMBO) or.....is it possible to share a trip. When I where young, I crewed with a chap to Holland and then the boat resided there for several weeks whilst others used it and brought it back.

So can this type of thing still be done or is there too much paper work? Ideally I would like to get to the Baltic but Scotland, Ireland or S brittany at a push would be fine. I can give a week in May over to sailing (Delivery to some where) and two weeks in July (to enjoy cruising around the area) and then would need other people to enjoy using it / bringing it back.

I was going to approach a couple of guys at the SC who have boats locally and who I have crewed for and would be happy for them to drive my boat. Additionally one of them has two boats and would need someoone to sail his second boat around the bay whilst mine is away.

Based in Jersey.

Any thoughts or ideas on this or experience. Also can not afford to leave the boat a long way from home all year.

Just check with your insurance company.

When I deliver or skipper the race boat in the absense of the owner all it takes is him sending me an email in advance confirming that I have his permission. And to be honest that's a rather belt and braces approach designed to create a paper trail to satisfy the insurance company, as all it technically takes is his verbal permission.

Although I have to admit I don't know what his insurance company would require if I did not hold a yachtmaster.

You could try a boat transport company. When I built my boat I had to move it in 3 pieces from my garden in Bucks to the Solent. I hired a fleet of 3 big boat transporters and it cost around £1k. The frucks were big enough to handle boats up to 50 ft so you could probably get something smaller & cheaper.

You could also consider crewing for someone further afield or doing a boat swap. How about a reciprocal crewing arrangement - a week on his boat, a week on yours.

I often want extra crew and I am sure there are plenty like me.

um yeah, that's why i posted. I think frucks would be an 'elision' not 'alliteration'. Actually, i spose "f***ing trucks" isn't alliteration either altho "f*** truck" or f***ing trucking" is alliterative. Heyho, another thread sent off the rails...

find some body with a nicholson 36 in another area and do a holiday boat swap if you arrange it properly.. discus with both insurance co's
Deposit policy excess in a joint sig' account get to know each other over a few weekends to establish some trust (is there a owners club find a long time member ?)

Thanks for the comments, I thought frucks where the commercial managers at harbours and marinas who set the charges....

Any way, thanks Snowleopard I had thought about looking in to some crewing opportunities and think it is a highly likely route. Must admit I had not really thought of a boat swap, fergie_mac66 but will have to give this serious consideration.
