We are still without a boat but have been looking again recently and have found 1, she is a scanmar 33 and she seems to tick all our boxes. Whist negotiations were going on a Nicholson 345 has come on the market which ,before our offer for the scanmar was accepted we had arranged to see. We are going today.
The Nic is 20 years older but from the photos looks very nice with recent engine and standing rigging.
Can anyone tell me anything about either of these boats because we have to make a descision.

Thanks.

The main difference is another 600kg pf displacement on the Nich, and the double berth on the Scanmar.

They were both designed at the same time (late 1970) so the "20 years older" is a bit inaccurate.

I am always slightly suspicious of the sail-leg drives (though without any real basis) , and prefer the traditional shaft drive on the Nich.

You are right Sarabande the age difference is actually 8 years. Don’t know where I got 20 from. Like you I have a thing about sail drives but for no real reason other than it seem wrong to have just a piece of rubber stopping the water coming in. This one has been recently replaced however.
Just got back from viewing the Nic and was gobsmacked at how big it seemed. The headroom is immense.
Descion time now but it think it has to be the Scanmar purely because of the condition and SWMBO preferres it.
Unless someone can tell me reason not to go for it. They both seem very capable boats.

Any difference in the age of the engines ? That would be a prime factor for me. Sails are more of a standard cost, but engines are big.

Though if herself has made up her mind..... :)

Both boats will look after you .

Your right I have no option do I.
The engine on the Nic is newer the scanmar has been re engined but it’s still 1999. You could eat your dinner off it though.
The Nic would need a fair but of cosmetic work inside to get it to be comparable with the scanmar and then there is that berth in the stern. You could have a party in there.
Not that we are in to that sort of thing

I installed my Yanmar engine in 1999, since when it has done 2600 hours. Still in as-new condition. This is no age at all for a good diesel that has been looked after.

When I bought my ex working girl big Nic the Yanmar 4JH5E had done 3,459 hours. It's six years old! So she had been spending 24 days a year under power! Surveyor suggested that I might improve the shining hour by replacing the cutless bearing! :) Her twin sister, bought by a friend, had 9,200 hours on her older one - starts and runs like a sewing machine.

My son worked as flotilla engineer and later as skipper for Sunsail in Turkey and Greece. Their lead boats almost never sail but motor ahead of the participants to the next port. None had hour meters but Owen reckoned they all must have done at least 15,000 hours and ran well. They were all Volvos, 2000 series I think.

Descision is made and we are going for the Scanmar. Just need to get a survey and the Broker is writing up the contract as we speak. Hope it’s all ok as I cannot wait for next spring now. We are in the process of trying to sell our house in order to downsize and retire. Anyone want a lovely cottage in Bedfordshire?

From the brokerage photos, the Scanmar looks like a much nicer boat, and much better cared for. Hope it all works out for you.

Agree with that comment. Looks a very well kept boat. That is a lovely engine (Volvo 2030). I had one in my last boat which did over 3500 hours trouble free apart from a head gasket under warranty and an alternator failure just before I sold it. Ran as well at the end as when new.
