Thick layer of oil in bilge

How do you plan to dispose of the old oil? Or oil contaminated rags etc.
I don't have a suggestion. Other than to check with disposal point to see what they will accept. Before I use something strange.
Or you could just chuck it in the bin.
 
I have a similar issue. Due to various issues, including a battery leak, I have a layer of sticky gunge in the bilge in between my engines. I don't want to emulsifier it it as it could end up clogging my newly fitted float switch and bilge pump. It's also an area that's hard to reach.

Is there some kind of cleaning pad / chemical that I could use on the end of a pole to clean it up?
 
Degreaser / solvent while boat is in transit - is good idea .... many of the bottles of engine cleaner are good for this ...

Once pumped / sucked out - using a Pela or similar ... and you are down to a mucky slimy bilge ... one of the best products ? Spray on Foaming Oven Cleaner .....
It lifts EVERYTHING ... spray - leave for a while ... wipe off ... repeat if needed .... once all clean - clean freshwater rinse to remove all traces of the cleaner and pump out ...

I use Oven Cleaner to prepare GRP for Echo Sounder in Hull tube fixing etc. or any item which needs gluing to the GRP ...
 
The only problem with oven cleaner is you'll need to hold your breath as it is extremely volatile and dangerous to breathe in. Especially in enclosed spaces.

Another option, not volatile but equally effective is Tec7 Multiclean. Same thing, foam based and works really well. Still I'd advise caution when using it. Especially against ignition.
 
Once the real gunge has been removed, another vote for cheapo washing up liquid to remove any light oil .

Have a might get round to it one day weep from the trim tab reservoir, lying on top of a no idea where its coming from rainwater leak.
A dash of washing up liquid and quick stir and the wet vac soon restores a dry clean bilge.
