Thermostat?

TAMD41P-A. Engine comes up to temp as before, possibly slightly slower, then maintains 80-85c while at cruising revs 2800-3200. When backed off to displacement revs, 1200-1500, the temp drops back to 40c ish whereas previously would stay at around 80c. Is it likely my thermostat is sticking open? I thought these engines had two thermostats, if so the likelihood of both failing together seems remote. Any other possible causes?

Hi. Have not experienced that problem. Reducing revs as quoted would reduce the coolant temperature very slowly and in the short term the temp may even go up a little due to the huge thermal mass of the engine and reduced coolant flow, even if your thermostats stayed fully open. Over what time did the temp reduce to 40? On mine, 40 is the minimum marked temperature on the gauge so probable reads that at ambient anyway so much more likely there is a connection/voltage problem at low revs.

If even one stat was stuck open it would take much longer to reach the norm 82 running temp. Did you notice that when you set off?

If you start from cold with your hand on the main coolant hose that comes out of the stat housing it should stay quite cool then after, say, 15 mins at idle, you will feel a quick rise in temp as the stats open. This will confirm the stats were closed from start.

Thermostats usually fail shut.

Temp reduces to 40/50c in about 10 minutes at 1500rpm Whereas previously it would stay at 80c. Leaving it to idle from cold it has never reached temp, only ~60c after an hour. I did think it warmed up slower yesterday than usual, running at 3000rpm temp usually rises quite quickly and runs up to 85c+ before dropping back quickly when the thermostat opens. Yesterday it just slowly reached cruising temp without any noticeable drop back as the stat opened. I’ll pull the stats and test when she comes out on October, no great harm being done at the moment.

Sounds like one has stuck or at least is sticking open. They operate at slightly different temperatures, but should not let the temperature dive like that.
Back out today and similar story, by the time I’ve tied up to my swinging mooring temp is at around 50c. Wouldn’t be so bad but I’m spending MUCH more time at displacement speeds since diesel almost tripled in price ?

You don’t want to run the engine cool. stats are one of the highest points in the coolant circuit. It’s a 10 min job max

fwiw, I exclusively run my 330bhp 6.7lt turbodiesels at Displacement speeds (cost and noise mainly) and coolant temps are at a steady 60-65C with 25C water temp (typically)
still running (touch wood!), however 40C is too low (imho)
