Dunno if its the heat or whatever, but there seems to be a spate of beating up forumites through abusive replies, when the original poster has merely asked a question or made a point with which the vast majority disagree.

eg not seeing a boat on to starboard, how much to pay a diver, showing a riding light on a mooring. There are probably others.

I am pretty thick skinned myself, but I don't think it does the forum many favours, as there is a risk that people will be hesitant or reluctant to ask questions for fear of getting shot down in flames.

Do others agree? Maybe I'm an old fashioned whinging member of the thought police, in which case I will shut up.

If you are articulate enough you should be able to get your view over without being rude
However it would take a lot of the fun out of some posts
 
Not much point having a forum if were not allowed to disagree with someone.BUT there is no excuse for abusive replies ever IMHO.

I think part of the problem lies when one person gets dozens of negative replies on the same post.Individually they are expressing an opinion but collectively they can knock the stuffing out of someone.

There was a bigger spate some weeks back
I remember thinking the same then.
Trouble is I read the posts and think "rather silly"
or "surely not"
Then find myself agreeing when some one says "very silly" and "certainly not"

All depends what tack the disagreeing person is on and if correct shapes are displayed(A pear shape would be appropriate) /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
 
I think when ppl post an opinion as fact which flies in the face of basic seamanship practices ........ then its time to say 'hold on there - lets take another look'

to me these forums are like a pub full of friends, you can wander past and choose to listen and interject, or move on to another area.

if however you hear some outrageous bullshit which is seemingly being taken as fact, one should feel able to interject (politely) and put ones point of view.

no - there are no stupid questions ....... but many stupid answers

Do we learn and improve ourselves more readily from hearing the absolutely cretinous incredible stupidity of others whereupon we say to ourselves /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gifwho would we be so foolish as to do that and pull our socks up to ensure we are not one of those poor morons, or by reading and adopting the pearls of wisdom donated by our betters ?
 
Must say there have been some pretty premenstrual series of posts recently with some moderate bitching. Perhaps the people left on the forum ( like me) are stuck being unable to sail quite as much as they'd like in this great weather and are therfore a bit tetchy. Apologies if I offend anyone- it's not intentional.

btw- I'm currently working in Brxham with a great view over Torbay watching all the yachts hoofing along in flat sea in a sunny force 5. It's pure torture, especially as I'm working this weekend as well /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Everyone is entitled to ask a stupid question. But you're not entitled to castigate someone for doing so. Educate, (if you're sure of your facts) take the <font color="black">pi</font><font color="black">ss</font>, (if you don't give offence) or simply wade into the debate.
I agree that some threads have become a repetitive castigation recently (Col Regs seem to raise a storm).
It is different to a pub debate as no-ne can tell if you're serious or joking in a forum.
 
I find that quite a few forumites have very bad spelling skills tho'.

I will take the opportunity of reminding them that CAT is spelt C-A-T, it is not spelt P-R-A-T as more than a few seem to think /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Errm, excuse me while I think about this one, as probably a grumpy old git offender, as oft pointed out by Jimi. I don't tend to jump on people posting boaty questions, and will answer most computer questions with the patience of a saint. I do tend to call people with bigoted opinions on Africa etc 'gits' which doesn't appear to go down too well with the targets.
