Re: Nostalgia tends to cloud fact

I get real tired of putting history straight on this one but the suspension mid way through last year had nothing to do with the in-crowd beating each other up. It came about when a rogue user appeared and started to adopt other peoples' IDs.

Karl and I got fed up not sleeping, the situation became impossible and so we killed the existing structure so that we could put a compulsory registration system in place.

Interesting because we thought that bringing that kind of discipline might dissuade the 300 or so recognisable users of those days from coming back. In fact we now have about 25 times that number registered, a figure that steadily grows.

I love the old Internet concept of a free-to-use, no registration forum and ybw.com was lucky enough to have users that respected that for over three years. The change was due to the actions of one person (many of which you didn't see because we were monitoring his actions in the end almost minute by minute) but we enjoyed the break and now enjoy the resultant improvements even more so.

Old age or something

I am registered on BYM forum - however I have never used it as the print is so small I cannot read it - (an age thing)

Content - can't comment as its too small to read!

sorry bedouin

erm, at the time i made that previous post, i hadn't read all the other stuff, and still haven't...evidently getting trampled here in the saloon bar.

I should bow to experience and support a ban on name-calling. Not a hope of it being enforced of course, too much traffic, too few moderators....I hope i didn't do this?

No, I can't believe that age can be the problem for somebody as youthfull as you. It must be something else you're doing that is making you go blind!

Re: Sorry your so tired Kim

I agree you had no choice in your actions at the time but I can't see that everything that has changed is an improvement. The bells and whistles took a lot of the feel out of the old site.

The real pity is that once again the influence of one tosser has been felt by so many genuine users. I don't doubt that it cost a few quid to sort it all out as well.

I am just disappointed, and this kind of post proves, that some people need to claim some sort of slight or superiority from one site to the other.

Still it takes all sorts.

Beat me to it Kim, with your answer I mean. I only came over from the haze of deisel and fag smoke in the motorboats forum because someone said one of our lot was causing gyp here.

And a thousand thanks to you for sorting it out. The old boards had become totally fouled up, in more ways than one, and were neither educational nor entertaining. The re-vamp and compulsory registration were the best things that have ever happened for internet-savvy yachties. Long may they remain so.

Many have tried to take part in BYM but seem to have trouble getting invloved. This includes myself.

They then wander away.

Although there is clearly a wealth of knowledge from the regular contributors one comes way with the feeling of being spoken 'to' rather than spoken
' with' . It may just be that Scuttlebutt would also be like this but for the higher number of postings ?

Most are of the wooden gaffer set who are bound to be a bit 'odd' ( for having them) or are all out racer types who think that the rest of us should get out of their way ( because they know more).

I think that Marian is very nice though.

Yo! Ian, that's going back quite a few years indeed a lifetime in Internet terms. Then there was that Guy from Alabama or somewhere (I can't remember his name) who seemed to think that the Black & Tans were running around Ireland burning down people's cottages, god I had some rucks with him privately. Yep! Nostalgia indeed, had to get steam up on our PCs in those days, download all the messages, reply to them, then re-connect to upload them. Believe it or not I still use the same NG reader today as I did then.

Do you still use an accoustic coupler with one of those bakelite telephone handsets? /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

You mean there aren't? Someone over there had better tell the forces of national liberation, as I believe they like to be called.

Well, at least you'll be pleased to know I'm staying out of the BYM/ybw debate. In fact always instructive to learn what people think one way or the other when it comes to comments on our site.

Sorry if you think the 'bells and whistles' have made things a little less adequate here. If you want to post or PM me with any dislikes I am always interested to hear your views.

Just naviaged over to 'them' site. Seemed pretty reasonable to me. Threads on Ellen, timed as starting before 'us' - broadening out to comments on A/C - thread about buying in the Caribbean - some laughs about a strange underwater yacht - loads of 'in' comments, rather like 'us'. Some repeats by NigeCh of threads he started pretty much the same as here. Older threads about what and how to buy. Not a lot of anti- stuff, like our rather nasty antiBav brigade. Tried the search engine on Scuttlebutt and found virtually nothing: jokey stuff, non-vitriolic. Loads of threads started by Marian, so what, women do tend to have more to say than blokes!! Looks as if, without her, there wouldn't be a site

Now, since this board attracts far more attention than 'them', there should be more interesting threads here, less need to be bitchy to one another (too many snipings and personalising of the commentary re: Bedouin for my liking) or to be bitchy about another site.

I think we should concentrate less on 'them and us' discussions, which go nowhere, and more on interesting, fun, happy postings.

IMHO, of course.
