The value of a sailor's eye

Since starting KTL I have had a red genoa

It works really well with the camera - white turns to blandness and offers no contrast to the background.

So I would love a red genoa for harmony

I assume a new one will cost around £1000 or so that seems an indulgence when she already has a serviceable white one

the genoa and sailmakers logo is in shot about ten per cent of the time in the films

each one gets watched about 4000 times a year on youtube, downloads and DVD

maybe 30 films a year - average 10 mins each

so that is 120,000 sailor eye minutes per year

maybe half that number for each of the subsequent five years

is that worth it to a sailmaker for a £1000 sail

I have absolutely no idea

Does anyone know a sailmaker who might go for it?


I shall also be keeping the same penant as I have had it on the whole journey

Careful, sounds like you may require the services of a young internet savvy blogger (provided they are not to busy with their own project).
But I would expect you could get it a bit cheaper than £1000.
There was a post a while ago from some one who had put some canvas cleaner on his mainsail cover and this had leeched the colour onto his mainsail, so get yourself some red canvas and canvas cleaner lay it over the genoa and apply cleaner leave for a day or so and Bob's your mums sisters husband.

I wonder how dyeing the white one would turn out? Polyester typically takes dye quite well, I believe, but I don't know if that applies to filled sailcloth.

I think I have two or three tan headsails in the shed, ex Kindred Spirit, but they'd probably be too small for Harmony and I don't need to be advertised anyway

Assuming the sail costs the sailmaker £500 to make

would he really sell that many extra sails because of the 120,000 sailor eye minutes

how many more sails does he need to sell to justify his investment?

ten, 20, 30

I have no idea

would seeing a sail in my films make anyone more likely to buy from that maker?

I would hate to be in charge of a marketing budget and to have to justify that spend to a CEO

There you go. Undershooting again!
Any upwardly mobile sail maker will be wanting to promote his/her abilities with new hi tech sail materials which tend to be brown rather than red or white.
White sails are so last century!
Cost is much higher but then you could conceivably get another 0.5 knots and finish your KTL quest that much faster.
I am assured that in these sponsorship things that the trick is to ask for an Aston and accept a Mini.

There must be 'serviceable' red sails in garages or even sail exchange ( Emsworth eg?) upand down this country

I have a red genoa that I have yet to fly, I really should have had my spare main made in red..It is lovely in bright sun and 'softens' a plastic boat too


Now, on the headlining bit..Will you please be posting regularly if using smelly glues, so, y'know, we know its all not overpowering..( good breeze tho)

spoke to a lady called Fiona and she sounded optimistic

she knows her job well enough tp understand that white sails do not photograph well

I sent her an email with a few links -

none to this forum

yet to hear back.

I wonder why i did not think of contacting them myself

I have spent many decades looking at telltales just above thier logo

cadets, 11+, GP14, Enterprise.

I think of them as a maker of sails for elderly dinghies

clearly not the case otherwise they would have gone years ago

Why restrict yourself. I bet if you tried you could sell a few £500 advertising packages to marine companies. It's petty cash for most. Think about where you could put, say 5 logos and actively sell them. That's a new suit I sails and a few nights in b&q when you want it.
