Most of you will know that last autumn, we moved our new Princess from Torquay down to the new MDL marina at Sant Carles in Spain. The weather gods were definately on our side - the whole delivery took less than 8 days including a very lazy day visiting friends form this forum in southern Spain.
Over the winter, SWMBO and I have been planning the next leg of our journey to Malta.
You will probably have read my post a couple of weeks ago from the new marina in Sant Carles where I had JennyWren lifted in readiness for her next exploit.
This was the result - ready for launch
And on this next mission, she will be doing an extensive trial of this Velox Propeller treatment - will it stick?
From the outset, the intention was not only to get her from the UK to Malta on her own bottom but TO DO IT OURSELVES.
To this end, SWMBO and I enlisted help from friends and the next leg is no exception. All the crew making this next trip are active posters on this forum. In deed this motley crew have been carefully selected from a very experienced group that meets monthly in Wokingham.
On this leg to help me, there will be Rickp, djefabs, Jimmy_the_Builder + SWMBO, my SWMBO and SHRMBO (she wor REALLY must be obeyed) - my daughter. Next month, Rickp and Jimmy_the_builder will make way for RogerRat and his SWMBO and our one and only Jez.
Now then - It's always drummed into us by the experts - let someone know where you are going - possibly a family member. Well, I've done that but I was thinking - how about telling the forum where we are going as well so here I am posting this on the Motor Boat Forum for you ALL to know.
JW is well equipped with the usual stuff - liferaft, EPIRB etc but on this occasion we are also taking a satellite phone which we have rented for the trip. Hopefully, it will not be used.
So, this is the route that we have planned.
We are all flying out on Saturday and if the weather is good then we will slip the mooring in Sant Carles on Sunday with a destination that day of Mahon in Menorca. The purple line on the chart.
One of the things that we have all been impressed about is the sheer power of this forum. Our first stop will be in Mahon where GSkip from this forum is based. He has already lined things up for us - berths, fuel and most importantly - restaurants. Its great to have friends we can rely on in far away ports.
The next passage will be the most challenging. This leg is longer than JW's range at normal cruising speed. But thanks to help for yet another forumite (Fendergirl) and to Timbad for letting her go, I have some really good fuel burn statistics and I'm really confident that the boat can make it if we can do about 100 nautical miles at displacement speed. This means setting off from Mahon in the evening, running through the night and then finishing off the passage at full cruising speed. The distance is about 308 miles and although JW could possibly make it at full cruising speed, it would take the fuel levels dangerously low - hence the plan to do 100 nm at displacement speeds. However, we also have a contingency. If the conditions get too rough for displacement speeds, we can easily reach Sardinia at full cruising speed without any fuel concerns.
This passage is the blue one and the dotted line is the contingency plan to Sardinia.
Finally, the red line will be a longish (240 mile) hop to Malta itself but this is a few days down the line and things may change as we go along.
So - watch this space - as they say.
