When reading books by the likes of F.B.Cooke and others of that generation they often refer to the Staines Model Roaster as an indispensable piece of cooking equipment. It appears a very simple device judging by the illustrations and surely something that can roast, stew, fry, boil, and steam has a place in the galley of any boat today. Anyone ever used one, are they still available?

If you pop over to the 'Reader to Reader 'section of the forum and do a search for the title "Palestinian Ovens"I think this may be similar to your enquiry and gives a couple of modern alternatives of the same ilk. They look very interesting so I'm thinking I may get one for my stove as it has no oven.
(if the search is poor it was only posted a couple of days ago)

hope this helps.

Further to my quest for information about the Staines Model Roaster I have discovered this great site dedicated to the galley - http://theboatgalley.com/ and in particular this article about the Omnia Stove which must be the closest thing to the Staines.

I have recently been presented, by the custodian of "Rose Rambler", with a mint, unused, Staines Model Roaster, which must have descended in a right line from Hum Barton.

This is interesting because Bill Tilman, friend of Hum Barton, had one (very well used, not least by me!)

I will take a picture and post it.

I bought an Omnia second hand off e-bay (hardly used) and haven't used it that much myself. I also picked up something similar from a local charity shop for use in the motorhome which doesn't have an oven. Not actually done any roasting or baking yet but it makes a good casserole.
