It is not unknown for us to grumble via this forum that the RYA does not appear very relevant to our branch of marine recreation (it may well be but devotes little space in their magazine to us).
With the forthcoming RYA council election we have the opportunity to select people who may represent ourselves - the problem is that I can only see one or two candidates who seem interested in motor boats .
Do any forum members know any of the candidates well enough to recommend them?
I do feel that we should fill in the ballot form rather than just bin it with the rest of the bits and bobs that come through the post.

Please see also the Johnny-TCM column and Ray Bulman's inside back page piece in last month's MBY - the one with Pearl 55 on cover. They covered issue of poor MoBo representation in RYA

I agree yr sentiments, but dunno the candidates so I binned the form.

(Talking of which, see also Johnny's piece in the new MBY about royal family and boating. ROTFL. Where does he get inspiration for this stuff?)

Sorry. I did not see the article , I only subscribe to MBM -MB&Y is a bit upmarket for me , but will read it next time I am in Smiffs.
I do not like to do nothing (thats how we got this government ) so I geuss I will just vote for the 2 who appear to have some contact with motor boats.

The RYA does have good features - I have benefited from their training & publications, and if there is a national boating organisation it is a pity not to use it to our best advantage.
Personally ,I do not like the "Royal horray Henry" image but that will not go away on its own.

Re: Oooh yes

Nah. If I'm being chairman it will have to be the
Mucky Farter Mobo Association.

Like many I threw the AGM info' in the bin in disgust.

I was on Council and on the Motor Boat Committee prior to it's consumption by RYA Cruising, from whence it originally came after much input from Dr Mark Warner (recently deceased and still not acknowledged by RYA - disgusting).

As far as I know there are only 2 wholly Motor Boat members of RYA Cruising. That is Trevor Jones, the last Motor Boat Committee chairman - Nice guy. Possibly too nice, and Paul Thomas.
I don't know if either is standing for Council.

Needless to say the RYA website mentions nothing about the elections, unless I can't find it.

One could sympathise with Ray Bulman's concerns about the RYA Council/ Committee make up returning to the days of "old boys network".
I hope I am wrong.

As a 'raggie' I can say that we have very similar views. I get the suspicion that the management consultants may have done a very good job on the RYA's bureaucracy, but that they really didn't think much about the members. Or could it be that that was the direction that they were pointed in?

I'm not sure that there is much difference between the interests of motorboaters and yachtsmen really. What would you like to see done on your behalf which would not also benefit the raggies?

A continuation of the tax free status of red diesel. I think at 1 mpg it would be of greater impact to us stinkies.

Looking after the interests of those who boat away from the coast. First bridge the raggies come to and thats it, but to us stinkies as long as depth and general navigability is maintained, no problem.

Speed limits in certain cruising areas, like Windermere.

There is probably more than you thought.
