Fireflys post got me thinking that many Raggies dont appear to ever bother to read col regs (self included, I had sailed for 12 years and never bothered to read col regs, no need as I had been taught 'power gives way to sail' as I was sailing then nothing more for me to know) it wasnt until I got a powerful mobo and started to mix with tankers that I decided I should attempt to learn what was going on.

Now just thinking perhaps we could slightly alter the Raggies motto and then the raggies will perhaps understand their duties better.

Can anyone think of a better motto ?

How about

' sail stands on as long as it doesn't inconvenience anyone else '

Seems a slightly more accurate abbreviation than 'Power gives way to sail'

How about "Colregs apply to motorboats as well as sailing boats and you can't rewrite them just because they inconvenience you..."?

I'm not attempting to re write col regs, I am attempting to rewrite the raggies motto :)

It had been my intention to draft a new motto with the help of the mobo forum and then post it on your forum in an educational thread, but seeing as you are here how many words do you think we can use before the raggies attention span deteriorates ?

the current motto is only 5 words 'power gives way to sail' ( we assume ,perhaps it used to be longer but the raggies forgot the last bit ) but not when under power or in Narrow channels and thou shouldnt tack without warning :D

Thats 15 words , too many ? ;)

What you need in a new day signal. Hoist a large D in the forepart of the vessel if you don't know the ColRegs and may change course at random.

first sign of inclement weather and the 3 months of winter raggie/mobo shenanigans begin lols :D the devil finds mischief for idle hands;)

Oh dear, what did say...

well actually, I think Daka's spot on, but I do blame the charter fleets around the Solent who I think must have laminated signs in the cockpit saying, "power gives way to sail".... I think one thing that would really help is removing these signs and adding one big sign attached to the engine key. "Once engine is running, you become a Motorboat"

What a fatuous thread, trying to drive a wedge between moboists and sailors that shouldn't be and needn't be there.

The Col Regs are very cleverly written to accommodate the capabilities and limitations of all sorts of vessel (although they get a bit thin when it comes to paddle power). Five word or fifteen word "mottos" cannot possibly hope to scratch the surface of the col regs. A thorough reading is the only answer, plus keeping a copy in the chart table for reference to the more esoteric sections.

Now lets all get out on the water and enjoy it in our own preferred way, without bashing other people's choices.

actually I thought it rather funny, it is all rather tongue in cheek, there have been many more serious thread debates on colregs.... Daka's certainly wasn't one....:D

It may have been your motto when you were a raggie but I don't think anyone else uses it. 15 words would probably be too many - it exceeds the attention span of a lot of mobos...:D

What's the warning for tacking - something sufficient to get someone back in the cockpit of the approaching motorboat to switch the authelm off probably? Shouldn't boats keep a good look out - especially when travelling at speed or in a narrow channel
