The Raggie Motto "Power gives way to sail"

A lesson to us all.

The other 99.9999999999999999 of us who actually enjoy our boating are now feeling so grateful that we are simply not wealthy enuff to boat in the arse end of England and promise to be happy we are poor and never ever complain about anything ever again. :)

Called boooooooring by a Broom owner, oh the shame

This thread demonstrates the futility of troll consistency

Mobo/Raggie thing is Soooooo boooooring. Z z z z z.

That's a bit unfair, its nice that the trolls from scuttlebutts feel comfortable to come across to the mobo forum and interrupt an otherwise serious debate.;)

You dont have to read a thread you get bored with let alone post on it .

Anyway if you are still reading there is one very serious fact that can be deduced from the contributions ...................... the Raggies really dont appear to be able to distinguish between the raggies moto 'power gives way to sail' and the actual col regs

Even from my limited water wanderings I think I could say with confidence that there's a sizable section of both mobo's & raggies that either don't know or selectively ignore! It was one of the things that worried me most when I got the boat, but the better I understand the regs, the more I realise that they're ignored by a significant section of the community.

Nice try but no coconut Pete - thought you would have known this one.

You only need to hoist a cone when you are being propelled by your motor, not just because you have your engine running. As he hasn't got a cone hoisted he is clearly sailing and the motorboat has contravened colregs by standing on.

If he isnt motoring how do you explain that he is pointing 20' better into the wind than the boat on the same tack in the distance under the anchor :p

2 reasons:

1 Under colregs he can't be considered to be motoring because he isn't displaying a cone so he must be treated as a sailing boat

and

2 he is pointing higher as he is having to luff up to avoid the motorboat who is clearly ignorant of colregs as in 1 above.

:p:p

Aren't you then contributing to the problem by behaving in such an unexpected way?

And aren't you taking my quote out of context? So what you're saying is it's ok for me to plough on regardless safe on the knowledge that if I am t-boned by a raggie under power it's ok 'cause I had right of way? Try that on the queens highway and see what the police say....

Why this debate? There is more than enough space on the water. If you look ahead, you have plenty of time to judge other boats' courses, whether they're sailing or motoring and even the smallest change of course will get you well out of eachother's way.

There isn't always that much room on the south coast, especially summer weekends.

I think you need to have a read of colregs if you are basing your judgements on "right of way" and they don't have any relevance on the queen's highway. As you allude to in your post we all need to behave in a predictable manner and everyone operating within colregs gives that predictability - individuals just stopping dead to let someone else "make of it what they will" because of some previous altercation can be an unpredicatable action that could then lead to unforeseen problems.

You should give Lake Solent a go!

It is just as achievable on the Solent - there are actually surprisingly few collisions considering the number of boats that are out there so most people seem to manage it. I wouldn't underestimate it as a lake either, I don't think there are many lakes with the tides, channels and hazards that the Solent has.

No I wish people wouldnt be little the river solent sailors...........

Tide

goes in and out.

Channels

loads of them, CG 16 and 67, QHM 11, Port Solent 80

Hazards

Scumsail yachts, Bramble Bank races, Cowes, Bavarias with bits dropping off :D

And the Raggies motto 'power gives way to sail ' has been adopted as local colregs  , here we go again :D

Actually what I said was if necessary. There is a big difference.

Don't forget the hazard of all the MOBOs who ignore the speed limit :)

I hope that isn't typical of the average mobo's understanding of tides, channels and hazards. If it is no wonder so many of them get themselves in a mess!
