The problem with race courses...

The Yacht could well have been unknowingly mowing down a fallen skier !!!!!

At 6 knots .... probably not ... they've got a long time to watch the water infront of them ....

If it's not legally enforcable, then the skipper, however selfishly, has the "right" to sail through the course.

[/ QUOTE ]
Indeed, he may well have the right, but you have to question the advisability. There are a lot of this type of post on here - I am thinking of the recent IoW ferry one, and the yacht standing on in the entrance to Pompey a little while back and ramming a warship, for example.

Personally, I would see staying out of the way of other people as a matter of common courtesy, as well as just a colregs issue. I will always try to get out of the way of commercial shipping even if I'm the stand on vessel, as at the end of the day I'm out for a play and they're doing their job. The only rider to this being that if I move when I'm technically the stand-on vessel, then I try to do so well in advance and obviously. I will go round the back of a yacht whenever possible, pass downwind of them where I can and if I have no option other than to cross a race, I'll slow down, pick my gap and sprint through if needed.

There are no doubt just as many aggresive/idiotic mobo incidents as raggie ones, but the raggie ones do seem to involve more bloody mindedness and a greater disregard of self preservation...

I would hazard a guess that for the majority of Mobos, it is easier for them to get out of the way ... not that it excuses either party!

Re: Raggies Unbelievable stupidity, Pics

[ QUOTE ]
Some might come "at you" when they are in close proximity of a competitor so they can use you to force the competitor to make a move they don't want to do (I do this with moored/anchored boats).

[/ QUOTE ]

And therein lies the problem, IMO. They simply don't appreciate what is like to be used as a target. They're assuming that we don't see them and won't take any action, or won't feel that they're an issue, when clearly we do.

Re: Raggies Unbelievable stupidity, Pics

Obviously not - perhaps they're not the "racy" type ... or weren't looking beyond the end of their chartplotter!!

Re: Raggies Unbelievable stupidity, Pics

True, which is why we see very few mobos getting in the way. SO given that they must be aware of their manouevrability, why do we see as many raggies as we do getting stuck in front of big fast moving things?

Just because you found an ancient right of way running across the M25, you wouldn't deliberately walk the dog there in the rush hour, would you?

Re: Raggies Unbelievable stupidity, Pics

I didn't say it was right ... and with a moving target I agree ... but with a fixed target rest assured we generally know what we're doing ...

With either target there will be wind shifts / lulls and gusts around you .. so if you can force a competitor to go the "wrong side" then it can mean an additional 1/2 boat length - again - not that it is right, but it can and does happen. The trick for the cruiser (sail as well as power) is to not allow yourself to be in that situation to start with - not always possible, but most of the time you can avoid it.

[/ QUOTE ] Because they approach so damm fast!!

Coming through the forts at portsmouth we look out to the Nab, check Portsmouth Harbour entrance as well as look up Southampton water ... even then you have to keep an eye out on the anchorage off Bembridge as well ... it takes quite a while to sail through these obstacles ... and sometimes you'll get it wrong ...

What makes me cross is the ferries that ignore the marked channel out to the Nab when we're trying to cross to Bembridge as we can't then anticipate which way they're going 2 go in order to keep clear ... however, we've not experienced that for a few years now.

By avoiding Chichester, for example? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Seriously, if that is what they are doing then a little education is needed. Great tactics to use with stationary targets or each other, but they should be made aware of how it affects the moving targets. A little education would go a long way. Anyone fancy taking a small group of racers out on a mobo through the middle of a fleet so they can see what it's like? Get them to try to make the helming decisions? Serious thought...

[/ QUOTE ] I've only seen a few do this - it is not general practice (except for the moored ones!) ... it does take quite a bit of skill to engineer that scenario though ...

As a racer, if you're making that offer seriously I'd accept like a shot.

Re: Raggies Unbelievable stupidity, Pics

this sort of thread achieves nothing.

If we all reported incidents we had seen over the weekend, we would need a new forum just for the purpose. Let me offer two examples:

- last Wednesday, a raggie motoring through a dinghy fleet about to start, in a river, told them to get out the way - totally out of order.
- yesterday, 50 high speed dinghies in a regatta, a big RIB with two 275's on the back goes right through the middle at high speed - totally out of order.

etc etc etc.

Stuff happens - learn to put up with it.

Re: Raggies Unbelievable stupidity, Pics

How's about this then...

What if the ski-racers use a raggie or two to marshal the race?

These 'marshals' could employ col-regs to hustle other raggies out the way!?

Brilliant!

Re: Raggies Unbelievable stupidity, Pics

Well if you have got flaming escorting you this weekend can I have the other forum sailing col reg expert ?

Dear Fireball,

Please will you help me exit Chichester lock 0930-1000 am Sunday outbound, we have water canon on board and lots of missiles but feel free to bring a case of your own !

You will be returned to Chichester Lock by noon.

The challenge

We wish to exit maintaining harbour speed while remaining in the marked channels, the use of reverse is prohibited before copious amounts of sound signals have been exhausted.

Cheers
Pete

Frankly I havent got a clue, remarkable I know, but no one has ever caught me in Chichester yet, thats why I thought it a good idea to have a local expert on board /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

ps,

If we dont get on you can come back in the donut /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I should have renamed this thread earlier as we hardly need another raggie/stinky faceoff, be kind to your fellow forumites folks!
